as mentioned earlier in the thread, the basic look has been available as a theme for ages. it didn't have all the fancy new features though. a screenshot of how it looked before the update:

Ah yes the theme has been out for months, I was on about the Gmail update itself!
 
it's probably some kind of paid for apps account? i'm just guessing mind.

edit: beaten like an egg (proverbial ginger step child is so last year. :p)
 
i paid $5 a few years back and even though i did not renew they never took the space back. The main reason i did it (before android phone) was to have some ownership over the account. At the time my best mate who also had his name '[email protected]' account hacked and pinched. Google failed to do anything about it, they told him if he had a linked payment method then its easy to restore to the rightful owner.
 
Not on the whole it isn't. Conversation threading is better now, sidebar usage is more streamlined among various other things.
 
Been using the 'preview' theme for ages. The preview was actually better, since it only pinned the message controls to the top of the window when you scrolled down. The 'new look' pins a load of other guff as well, which takes up too much vertical space on my laptop.
 
LOL I've been waiting for the "switch to new Gmail" button for ages... I'm sitting here reading this thread thinking "where the hell is mine???" :confused:

It turns out if you have tasks open all the time, it's hidden behind it! GGGRRRR! Just in case anyone can't find it, close tasks ;)
