Anyone had a root canal done?

yes. 4! on my top front teeth!

you don't feel a thing.

they numb you. remove the nerve which you dont feel. after that you cant have pain as the nerve is gone!

i was pooing myself about it, but it was 100% fine.

have no fear :)

This thread has turned me a rather rancid shade of green. Thanks VIRII :(

LOL - I have pictures taken about 10 minutes after my front teeth broke :) Was a REALLY long time ago though (mid 80s) so I won't be posting them due to hideous jumperness.

root canal fillings are the same as a normal filling just take longer and cost more if you are getting pain then change your dentist

erm....not quite my friend. RCT is a lot more advanced than your common filling.

I've had one which ended up with a crown too.

With mine, he opened up the tooth, out some cotton wool with a chemical to kill the nerve on into the tooth, stuck a temp filling over it and sent me away for 2 weeks. By the time I went back the nerve was dead so after pulling it out, it was just like a normal filling. The crown was odd though - took a while before it felt like one of my own teeth again.

Everyone I know whos had a root canal has said the same as other posters - loads of anaesthetic and then pull it out. Maybe mine was done differently because I'm a highly nervous patient and he was trying not to hurt or scare me.

Lol pictures of a numb mouth, quite possible still bloody, and the picture wont be posted due to your attire? :p

Must be a bad jumper!!

As I said above - there are live nerves and dead nerves and it all depends on how lucky you are. I had complete hell with one and every dig into my 'canals' caused great pain and he couldn't give me any more anaesthetic. The following two I had done my nerves were dead so I felt nothing.

Recently had two widsom teeth out, not like a root canal, but weren't pleasant. Reminiscent of almost every cult horror film out there and, boy did i writhe while in that chair. :)

well it was fine, needed 2 injections though felt a lot after the first, then had each root numbed too lol.

Was fine though really, just awkward having mouth open that long!

he had to cut a bit of the nerve off, he showed me it too, was cool.

the prce though...

<cry>

Well it hurts but its not that bad, I had one two done, you might need some antibiotics as well so you might want to do it, say, on Friday so you have two days to rest.

Had one done in a front tooth and it wasn't painful in anyway but it was unpleasant from the point of view of having to keep your mouth stretched open for 20+ minutes and all the drilling and blood but definitely worth it to get rid of the toothache. Had to go back a few times and get a dressing in my tooth changed before the final filling was aplied.

Yes, Im 16 and have had a root canal done, the infection was soooo bad that i didn't go school for a week because of the pain and the tablets and antibiotics (sp?) he gave me didnt help me with the pain and i was crying everyday because of tht, it was that bad. My nerves were dead by the time he took them out and i didnt suffer from any pain although like mentioned it the thread before, you get a very foul taste when he takes them out :(

It took 5 sittings for it to be finished, 4 sittings it took for them to clean the tooth out:( and last one was when they finished it all of and i got a nice GOLD crown on it now aswell:D:D.

Best of all, It was free!

I have hideous jumperness memories too....

I think anybody who was relatively young in the 80s wil have hideous jumperness memories - as well as shoulder length hair and flared breeks type memories :o

It's a miracle we're not more traumatised than we already are :(

Stan :)

Can i ask why u went for a gold crown as opposed to say, white? Its just that i dont understand why people prefer to have coloured teeth?

Myself - ive paid a lot of money for my crowns to make sure they match the colour of my real teeth.

Well that and the stupid expression on my face.

never had a root canal but when i had one of my wisdom teeth taken out a few years ago it took 45 mins!! the woman had to break the tooth into about 5 peices - she was sweating more than me lol. The roots where all hooked into the jawbone so was very difficult to remove - another wisdom tooth at the same time was easy to remove and came out whole and she wanted to keep it so she could show her students (it was leeds dental hospital) as it was pretty rare - due to the hooks.

i didn't feel a thing but the suction tube was transparent so when she started to break the tooth in peices the tube instantly turned bright red, and stayed like that for a while - it was pretty cool, sort of. But she did advise me to get a taxi home due to the amount of blood.

but don't let that scare you........... :)

Yes - I had one done last year some time. The best thing to do, before you go to the dentist is take some co-codemol (get it over the counter at a chemist), which will get rid of any pain you feel. They'll then remove the nerve under injection (this is usually the bit that people say is the most painful - I felt nothing!).

After that, the rest of the work is easy, & pain free, other than the injections :)

Also, ask your dentist to give you a just in case prescription for antibiotics, because often you will get an infection.
