Hello,

I'm due to go and see a specialist on friday to discuss an operation I need to have on my left shoulder, after dislocating it badly....9 times

Has anyone here had anything similar? I'm not looking forward to not being able to drive, thats for sure.

How long were you off work for? And what was your rough recovery time?

Please, no medical advice, I'm just looking for people to share their experiences.

Ta!

Ben :)

I've dislocated my shoulder before and had surgery after the tendons had healed. Haven't dislocated it since, and have relatively strong/powerful shoulders.

However, I have a lot of rotator cuff niggles as a result which I never had before dislocating it.

My arm was in a sling for about 4 weeks, but I didn't take any time off work (just booked holiday) I was able to get to work and get on with some work without needing to be off. :)

After 4 weeks, I had about 8 physio sessions (1 a week). Then one every 2 months to see my progress.

As I said now, certainly with my gym addiction, my shoulder is right as rain, bar as I mentioned some RC issues.

I don't understand how people break bones so easily.

I've never broken any bones in my body and I do a lot of crazy ****. My bones are rock solid tbf.

Lucky that nothing's broken then :)

To be fair I give my body a LOT of abuse, so I'm suprised its taken this long to damage something :/

Could you explain to a n00b what Rotator Cuff issues are? :o

The Rotator Cuff is the rather complicated set of muscles and tendons that allow the movement of your shoulder in various different directions. Think about how many different ways you can move your shoulder, compared to other joints.

Niggles are likely to be issues with rotating and having full and proper movement.

I personally broke the the neck of my Humerus a couple of years ago, didn't require any surgery though, I just had it in a sling for about 6 weeks while it healed, before undergoing lots of physio to get it moving again.

When I had my last Doctor's appointment, they said I was fine and it didn't seem there was any rotator cuff damage.

Since time has gone on though, I find that my previously broken shoulder can really click. Worst is, that it will sometimes have a feeling of resistance in some positions, and then 'jump' quickly from the resistance to a new position.

That's pretty much what I'd classify a niggle, it's not a life altering problem, but it's clearly not functioning in the way it was pre-injury.

Not had it checked out since though, which I'm thinking of doing, but at the sametime, I've not really done the weights I used to do beforehand, that might build the muscles back up.

Nobody's bones are rock solid.
I don't know what crazy stuff you do, but I've personally broken bones through Snowboarding and Mountain Biking, both are through doing sports which can be considered dangerous. In both cases its happened because a bone/limb has absorbed all the energy from speed, bringing me to a dead stop. There's only so much a bone can take before it breaks.

People also break bones easier as they got older as your bones loose their strength and become more brittle, which is why an old person just falling over can break something.

Ok, so I went to see the doctor today to get the results of my ultrasound..

I have a 6mm tear in one of my tendons, a lesion because of this, and very badly damaged cartilage.

Suregery time! Apparently it hurts like hell, can anyone confirm this? :p

Funny that :p Both my breaks were from playing football, ankle and wrist. Only got tripped and landed funny to break the wrist badly. Skiiing, snowboarding and mtb worst ive done is sprain a wrist and a few bruises.

Nexus explained what it is quite well. I basically get shoulder pain and niggles, certainly after doing a lot of intense weight training, rugby or general exercise which involves my shoulder. However I have RC exercises and stretches I do to mitigate the symptoms.

Clearly you don't do enough crazy ****. Alternatively you've been very lucky.

If you're feeling left out I could snap a few of yours for you? :)
