Hi all,

ive just got my MBP up and running, but when it came to connecting to my Netgear router (DG834G) I can only connect to it without no encryption.

I want to use the WEP encyption but whenever I do I cant connect to the router?!
Also I have added the MB to the Setup Access List too.

Any ideas guys?

You have to make sure that the encryption that your enter the key for on the MBP matches the encryption on the router. Such as 128bit/Hex otherwise it'll not work :)

Hope that helps!

I had similar probs. make sure the key on the router and MBP are the same.. not just the actual key, but the type.. mine defaulted to 128bit ascii and not hex
worth a try any way

I had to change mine to 128bit hex manually to get it to work (Macbook and DG834). So it seems a bit pot luck really. ;)

hehe, slowly re-read what I said... and you will have agreed with me ;)

Why not just use a list of allowed MAC address's for the PCs, that way it's easy to connect and you won't ever forget the password :)

Using 17" MBP on a DG834PN here with no probs!

Because for one, you shouldn't need to remember the password (the OS should remember it once you've connected), and for two, a MAC address access list on its own is completely worthless - it's even more trivial to pull an unencrypted MAC address out of the air than it is to crack WEP.

when using wep you may need to put a $ sign in front of your key, like has been said you'd be better off using wpa or wpa2 if you can.

TBH, people are wising up about stealing wifi. You should
activate WPA2
activate MAC filtering
turn off SSID broadcast
change default SSID
change administrator login/password
disable remote administration of your router
and potentially reduce the output power (not all routers can do this)

If you turn off broadcasting the SSID then how do you connect?

I never understood it myself, so I have always left it on by default (:()

You enter the connection manually into your computer. If it knows the name, there is no need for the SSID to be broadcast

right guys, this is what i did:
similar to what AdWright posted

Activated WPA2
Activated MAC filtering (on already)
Turned off SSID broadcast
Change default SSID (already changed)

all went through fine! :)

thanks for the help guys!! (will post up pics in the morn)
