This is the results i get from speedtester.bt.com

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 135 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 224 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 92

and after about 20 mins......

DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 3168 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 95

Regardless of the downstream figure, i`m never able to download anything faster than 12kpbs to 18kbps.

BT tell me that there is no problem on my line. They have ran theor tests and there is no fault. The reckon it`s my equipment.

I have tried 2 netgear routers and a BT Voyager Modem in the master socket in my house and all give me approximately the same results. I can`t download any faster than around 18kbps. I`ve also bought about 30 quids worth of micro filters. All with the same result.

Anyone have any ideas on what my next step should be?. It hasn`t always been this poor. The fastest i`ve ever been able to download was approx 80 - 100 kbps but that was around 6 months ago.

It`s very frustrating and costs me £29.99 a month.

Any ideas anyone?

Where are you trying to download from?

Is it torrents are you downloading are you forwarding the ports propperly ?

Hi David,

Downloading anything, even simple surfing sucks.

I download from the likes of Easynews etc but it`s imply chronic.

For example if i go to www.nvidia.com and try downloading the latest drivers i get it coming in at 15.1kb/sec

It starts at 95kb/sec and drops to 15.1kb/sec very quickly and stablises there.

Have you tried using the BT test socket behind the master socket faceplate?

TBH i haven`t tried that yet.

Really didn`t think it would make any difference tbh but it looks like i`ll need to give it a go to eliminate all possibilities.

It made quite a big difference with my IP profile mate, went from 4000k to a 6500k profile after I sorted my internal wireing out :D

What exactly is an IP Profile mate?

Mine sounds crap at 135k compared to yours :( :D

An ip profile is set at your exchange. Its what speed your line can handle. Depending at what your router syncs at determines what profile you have. As my router is connected at 7414k my profile is 6500k.

I'm sure somebody else can explain this better than me though.

Just re-ran the test plugged into the service socket (socket behind the face plate) on the master socket with exactly the same poor results.

Could it be that i`m just too far away from the exchange to expect anything better?.

I remember when i first applied, they said i was at the maximum range and probably wouldn`t get full speed capability.

I also assume changing ISP would have no effect.

Being to far away probably is the reason why your speed is what it is mate. Just how far away are you?

Posting some router stats, line attenuation & snr etc would help to.

Possibly the only other way to get better speeds is to go cable.

Approx 4 miles from the exchange, maybe a little bit more.

Not quite sure how to run those other tests and cable is not in my area.

The frustrating part is that i`ve had boradband in for approx 4 years now and it`s deteriorated year after year.

BT claim there is no problem with the line.

Very frustrating.

Those stats suck badly, I'd be pretty confident you have a dodgy line that needs investigating. As mentioned above see if you can get some stats from your router regarding attenuation etc... If you are 4 miles 'as the crow flies' then your actual line length could be double that, which would put you on the edge of usability, any further deterioration of your line would send it downward, which looks like what has happened.

Do you have a sky box? if so make sure it's filtered.
