I have a Canon 400D with the kit lens & a Sigma 70-300MM & tripod.

I am 100% noob - still don't get settings etc mainly use auto - preset settings :( i know its fail.

Anyway, my dad want's me to take photos of my niece (7 months old) on the beach today its sunny here today (very bright along the seaside)

If anyone has any tips for shooting just for today ill be happy :)

This is what i came up with today it was the 1st time ive used AV mode so im happy :)

How can i manipulate this image to get the same affect as the one i poted above?

Thoes settings in Av mode yes?
 
Keep shooting and experimenting with different settings. For portraits and stills, I tend to use Av mode to control the depth of field.

When shooting sports, I will use Tv to control shutter speed. I use manual mode mostly with flash.

Heres an edit to try and get close to what your looking, done in photoshop.

What settings did you do to get that affect? i have a trial of PS3 photoshop
if you have a youtube tut on how to do that affect id be happy :)

The effect is called bleach bypass, I use Nik Color Efex which has a lot of filters/actions and is a good starting point but expensive. I'm sure there are free actions for photoshop if you search for bleach bypass.
