I wouldn't skip Phlebas either. Algebraist is one of the best for sure; loved that setting and scope. I did briefly meet him and have a signed copy of Surface Detail. One of my big regrets is that his widow rang my work to close their account after he passed and I didn't tell her how much enjoyment his books had given me. I didn't really connect it all while on the phone; such a shame. I still haven't read the Quarry despite having the hardback since release.
The only other author I have pretty much all of the books they've written on my shelves and not yet mentioned is China Miéville. Not strict Sci Fi but worth a mention. Definitely odd and knowing he's a Marxist does help explain some of it
