Anyone here a Train Driver (Operator)?

Nope a track worker. Do lots of work with an engineering train.

Oh and remember with all railway work, strict medical and drugs policy. Alcohol limit is 1/3rd drink drive limit and shift work.

Mainline I presume ?

Now get your Geismar back out and gauge me some track :p:D

Drink Drugs policy is very strict and tested frequently, especially for those first hand undertaking the maintenance and upgrades. Not too bad for those in the office, but then again it is totally random.

You do realize that, as a train operator, you're always sitting in a small cabin looking at the tracks during your entire career. But hey, at least you don't have an annoying manager nearby :D

And it probably ruins your career and the rest of your life.

Didn't ruin my ex's dads.

he'd actually say that he could do with someone doing it again so he can play MOH.

The reason they have such obscene salaries is because they have formed unions and hold the public to ransom. Remember that next time these parasites go on strike. It's people like us who are forced to pay high travel fares to fund their ridiculous salaries.

wind your neck in. as it's be shown the high pay is for what is a high skill and stress job.
and the basic is not that high. the money being quoted is top line with overtime and unsocial hours pay.

bullit

High skill?? It's a semi-skilled job at best.

Can't see it being that stressful either if you disregard the suicides but they have benefits for that too.

These 'drivers' are paid better than nurses. It's not right.

Do you know anything about the job at all?

A lot of society is paid more than nurses.

got a point to be fair!
they are paid an insane amount if these figures are true. but its what you get when you have so much responsability for getting people from A to B.. just like Pilots i guess..in a sence..

Must be horrible seeing and hearing someone commiting suicide under the train your driving, is it worth the money and lifestyle if you end up really distressed by witnessing something like that.

My dad's been train driver for Virgin trains for atleast 20 or so years now. It's a well paid job but the hours are quite random. I like it because family get free unlimited train travel, can't complain :p

If you want more info PM me and ill find out what you want to know.

I question if train driving is a highly skilled job, what exactly makes it so?

Definitely doesn't warrant a wage of £50k+ in my opinion.
Starting wage is equal to that of a copper and more so than a fireman? Ludicrous!

I can't see it being much more skilled than a HGV driver and how much do they get paid?

I'd also suggest the people laying the track are in a more skilled job.
