I have been thinking about geting a breadmaker someone i used to work with a couple of years ago had one an she said that she put the stuff in at night an set a timer an woke up to fresh bread,

does anyone have a breadmaker or can recommend a half decent one,
what should i be looking for or what shouldnt?

thanks
Ransom

You want that self mixes the dough, which means it will have some sort of dough hook inside, that means you can just chuck in the ingredients, set the timer and leave it.

I have a very old round loaf one, the make of which i cant be bothered to go find out :)

I had one but keeping the dough from sticking to the tin and separating the blade from the bread proved to be more hassle than the tiny loaf was worth.

Just make sure you put the ingredients into the tin in the right order.

1. Liquid ingredients (water, eggs, milk, fat, honey)
2. Flour, to "seal" in the liquid
3. Other dry ingredients (dry milk, salt, sugar, seasonings)
4. Add the yeast last.

Adding the yeast in last is the most important as it is activated by the water.

I have had the the panasonic SD253 for about four years and cant fault it, I use the bread mixes most of the time but do occasional make it up from ingredients. I think its well worth having one.

Girlfriend has the Panasonic SD253, I bought my Mom a SD255 and they are both great. Easy to use and produce very good bread. It's also nice knowing exactly how much of what you have put in. Also eating the first warm slice of each loaf is a special treat you come to treasure.

Edit: the pizza dough recipe makes fantastic pizza by the way. Use a pizza stone or other pizza plate and pre heat the plate to 220 deg C roll the dough to 1/4 inch thick put on plate. Add homemade tomato paste and toppings and cook at 220 for 9mins and you'll never want to eat another pre-made pizza again.

Don't accept anything less than the Panasonic one, everyone else I know with a breadmaker is never happy with their bread. I have the SD253 which has served me well for a couple of years. There is nothing like waking up to that smell of fresh bread and then frying up some nice thick bacon to put between it. :)

When I'm making white bread for the morning this is the recipe I use which I found on the web, it works well (put the yeast under the flour to protect it from the water):

1 teaspoon easy fast acting yeast (I use the sachets and then JUST one 'heaped' teaspoon or its too airy - 1 sachet can make 2 or 3 loaves)
500gms Strong White Breadmaker flour
1.5 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
25gms butter
320mls water

We had a breadmaker, practically brand new... Morphy Richards or Panasonic... something like that, half decent one.

Used once or twice.

I just asked my parents if we still had it, you coulda had it for free.

Turns out they couldn't even give it away and took it to the dump and chucked it in a skip...

So this breadmaker of which you're not sure of what make it was, how come you only made a maximum of two loaves and then gave up?

Morphy Richards ones aren't half decent by the way, they are rubbish. If it was a Panasonic at your parents took it to the tip then they missed out selling it on ebay really!

Well it was a birthday present, wasn't really wanted.

Ok, the idea of fresh bread is nice, but no one ever got round to making the stuff.

I have a morpy richards compact one, Its great, I make amazing bread with it. However, the recipies written in their book / manual don't always come out how you hope and that’s my only criticism with the MR one that you need to know how to make bread and tweak the recipies to get em good, and when you do they are.
