Wish i was in a Ramen Shop Counter
I'm looking to buy a car in the summer, apart from the Focus (which is on the shortlist), I am looking into the Yaris.

Looking to spend no more than £4k really (1st car), 1.3L possibly. Can someone tell me things I should look out for and what is a good price for one? And any part of the car I should look out for?

Looking through Autotrader, a 2006 facelift model seem possible and preferred. Seen one for £3,800 and it has 27,000 miles from a dealer. I am thinking its too good to be true?

Have a 2004 model 1.0ltr Yaris. The little thing is indestructible. First thing to go wrong with it is a slow leak on a water seal. 45k miles, 7yrs. Incredible.

The car that sounds to good to be true unfortunately is, its CAT D recorded according to the advert so its been crashed and "repaired" :(

How about a Fiesta? You should be able to get a good MK6 possibly even a MK6.5 (facelift) for your budget.

My friends was pretty crap, seats forgot their place when you slide them forward. Central locking failed after a couple of years, it went back to the dealer again for something else and he traded it in then.

Also, there's a gay version of auto trader who keep track of the most searched for car, it's consistently the Yaris.

Despite certain recent recalls though, a Toyota probably won't let you down, better than a lot of other hatchbacks I could name.

Missed the Cat D part ! My gut was telling me it was too good to be true.

Oh well !

Fiesta might be on the list but not looked into them yet, one car at a time :)

My Mrs has a 1 litre 2002 model, it replaced her Fiesta, easy to drive and great around town. It does 45+ mpg on the average drive, insurance and tax are cheap.

The driving position is higher than the fiesta.

The seats fold down flat, giving a fair bit of haulage space. Gearbox and steering feel a tad plastic, but they do the job. No problems at all with it.

Sorry this is badly written, did it on my phone

My mum has had a yaris about 10 years and the only thing she's had go wrong are a couple of door locks seizing, one passenger then twice on the drivers side. Toyota put it down to a bad batch of locks.

They may be reliable and popular but I really don't like the Yaris. I just find them bland and characterless and fairly disconnected to drive. Like many toyotas, it's a competent car which is just boring - though I guess some people want this.

It's not a terrible buy but considering the price premium you'd be better of with a fiesta in my opinion. :)

Whatever you do, get out there and test drive lots of cars, you can only tell so much from reviews and spec sheets!

We have a 2003 1.3 Yaris T3 5dr and as a tool it is excellent, even if it is a bit dull to drive.

I'd concentrate on getting a 1.3 over a 1l as it gets as near as makes no difference the same MPG but is also that little bit more powerful and less buzzy on the motorway. We picked up ours for £2500 with 75k on the clock and FSH, however if you don't need 5 doors then you could get an identical 3 door for cheaper. Ours has averaged 45mpg since we've had it and this includes commuting 20 miles a day in rush hour traffic, insurance is also much cheaper than the equivalent Fiesta. It's not the best car to drive but it does give more driver feedback than people think and handles pretty good considering it's aimed at ferrying pensioners to Tesco.

The main things to look out for on the mk1/1.5 cars are stonechips as the paintwork is quite soft and a whine from the transmission which sounds like you've fitted a cheap supercharger to the engine. If you do drive one with a whiny transmission and it is loud enough to annoy you, don't get it as it is a ballache to fix and it's not as though there aren't plenty more around. Also, expect some rattles from the interior as it's typically Japanese with solid build quality but not the best materials. Engine wise, these cars are about as reliable as you can get.

Overall, if I was looking for a car that did great MPG, can be parked in the smallest of city centre spaces, was unbelievably reliable and is half decent to drive, I still can't think of any better cars out there.

I've learned in both a Yaris and Fiesta so I know how they handle.

I don't find them bland at all actually. :)

and as a first car, I am not looking it to drive like a Evo, I want it to run and run, then get rid may be in 2 years after i have some no claims to get something better.

I have a Yaris T-Sport. Touch wood it's running sweet so far, has done 40k miles and is a 2003. Good little cars, loads of them where I live, nearly everyone has one for a runabout. Haven't had any problems with mine so far, good purchase.

The newer ones are nice and drive like a "big car". Good purchase if you do proceed to buy one.

Yeah I have a 1.3l SR and am part of the owners club. They are amazingly reliable cars, not many issues with them to note of. Very economical as well, mines done 117,000 miles and still going strong, can get 47-50mpg quite easily and even up to 60-65 mpg if I drive particularly well! 4k is easily enough money to buy one and as said earlier the back seats are pretty epic and slide forward and back and can be folded up to make a massive boot. They were face-lifted in 2003 and given new bumpers, different air vents, the 'tear drop' headlights and a few other tweaks, although both editions of the mk1 yaris are awesome I would probably go with the mark 2 just for the extra bits.

What are you getting one for? A cheap run around? Or a main car? Do you need good economy etc? as just wondering if the t-sport would be the best one for you.

Have a look at http://www.yarisclubuk.com/forum/ and have a read on their, loads of information on the yaris and any questions let me know. They are also fun little cars to drive, with some lowering springs and a rear antiroll bar added their handling becomes epic!

In many ways the Yaris is perfect for a first car, particularly down to its size and the good visibility all around, when parking. It's not gonna pull up trees (which is favourable for insurance and less so at the lights) but it's a fairly decent car.

Worked at a few of them and it would be a rare occasion that they would give much bother, if any at all.

Parents have a 1.3 one from the same year. Never had a problem. They've had from new, and its now on about 65k miles, and runs faultlessly :)

An old W reg one we had abit before, had one minor little problem, replaced part (can't remember what it was all about :p) and ran fine after :)

My sister drives and 1.0 2001 model, and absolutely loves it. Whilst I wouldn't get one myself, I am impressed with its reliability. Its done 85k miles now and never been in for anything other than a service/mot.

Looks like this is pretty high on m short list ATM (albeit a very short list!)

Just wondering what is this VVT and what extras does the T sports have over the non T sports versions?

Also, how many miles is the cam belt change for this car or the BIG service, obviously I rather not get one that just about to come up to that mileage or get one just had it done.

I've got a Yaris.

Bought it new in June last year after the missus totalled our 106. Went for the 1.33 5 door TR spec model.

Easy to drive and cost me £48 for a full tank on sunday does 74mpg if i drive like a granny on the motorway

£30 tax too
