I am relocating to Exeter along with my partner over the next month. Currently looking at places to rent. Anyone here live in Exeter have any tips/inside knowledge of where to live, where not to, etc.?

Would be appreciated :D

I live further up the M5 but my collegue used to be a rep and covered exeter and has said in the past there are no dreadful areas compared to bristol.

I would agree that there are no dreadful areas but I've heard that St Thomas is the not so nice part (I haven't lived there and don't really go over that way too often so can only go on what I've been told). Having said that it is cheaper than other areas.

I would say if you like going out etc. try to live not too far from the centre as I'm out at the far end of Pinhoe Rd. and it seems like miles to walk back after a night out and that's by no means the furthest away from the centre

I have lived in Exeter all my life. And whilst some areas such as Burnthouse Lane used to have a reputation of being a bit rough, it has calmed down a lot in the last few years. You still get groups of ASBO kids hanging around on street corners, but they're pretty harmless.

If you can avoid Burnthouse Lane then good, but if not, you could do a lot worse outside of Exeter :)

If you have any more questions just ask in here

Thanks for these replies guys, really appreciated :)

Always useful to have a little "inside" knowledge.

Do any of you know of any decent and reasonably priced gyms in the area?

Born and grew up in Exeter. There's a couple of rough roads up around St Thomas, and i'd try to avoid Burnthouse Lane and Rifford Road but bar that, it's a really lovely city.

You might find property/renting cheaper if you go just outside of Exeter, places like Tiverton/Crediton/Honiton are still within easy driving distance but you aren't paying for the convenience of living in a city.

Gym wise, there's Fitness First but i'm not sure what the pricing is like. My brother raved about the one near the Iron Bridge in Exeter though, that might be worth checking out as he's quite fussy. Studio or something I believe, it's quite tucked away.

There are quite a few gyms in the area. I go to wonford sports center which is run by Parkwood Leisure. They also run a few other gyms in the city I believe, including Riverside, Pyramids and Clifton Hill etc.

I pay roughly £25/month (which I believe might have gone up slightly) but that gives you access to all their gyms. They offer free classes with membership and Riverside + Pyramids both have swimming pools.

I would agree with this.

I think they moved on a lot of the trouble makers by burnt house lane and Rifford Road.

I would stay away from Crediton; well the nightlife. The town itself is quite nice but it's filled with roughnecks on a Friday and Saturday.

Tiverton is lovely but has a lot of inbreeding so I would imagine they would welcome some new blood :D

Thanks for all the replies :)

Going to be looking at an apartment in Gabriel's Wharf on Tuesday.

Have a few others on the list (a good few in North West Exeter), but will all depend on whether the people are able to show us around on Tuesday. Luckily Exeter is only about 2 hours away from me.

Money is going to be slightly tight over the next year or so, so want somewhere nice, but realise that it is just temporary.

A couple of things you might want to note.

First is that Exbridges (the main roads over the river) gets very busy at rush hour and at weekends so if you're needing to drive around there a lot you might just want to keep that in mind.

Second is that if you're looking at places near the uni you may get noise from students. I've never found the noise that bad but again you may just want to be aware of that

Luckily there won't be too much commuting, most of the time I will be in Exeter.

I will have 6 weeks going to Kingsteignton everyday and another 6 weeks going to Colyton (a bit more of a hike).

Exeter's a good city and very liveable. I spent three years there at uni, so let me know if you want more specifics. The university gym is very good, and general members of the public can join for £275/year.

I need to make a thread just like this one so I searched for this one. I am moving to Exeter in a couple of weeks, looking at flats this weekend so hopefully get one!

I will be commuting up to Bude every day though which is quite a strain on the finances!

Moved here two years ago to do my PhD, currently renting in Heavitree which is a pretty nice area and it only takes me 10 minutes to walk into town. Most areas are great, but with Exeter you get what you pay for. Don't expect too many great, cheap places. For a small city it's rather expensive to live here.

Yeah noticed that, the places I am looking at are about £600 in rent when I'd like closer to £500, if I didn't have to spend £300 on petrol a month to get to work it would be fine though.

And because of the commute, I can only look at areas where I can get out to the A30 quick.

Buy 26 Victoria Street. Best house in Exeter ;)

Always fancied somewhere on Princesshay or near Dix's Field myself, though perhaps somewhere in or near Bickleigh, Crediton or Clyst Honiton may provide easy access with a slightly better price. All three are gorgeous places too. Went to Uni in Exeter and spent far too many years living in around Devon. :)

I'm not one to shy away from a commute (used to do Torquay to Exeter every day which isn't exactly far, and nowadays it's >100 miles to get into any of our offices) but I wouldn't want to do Exeter > Bude every day :(

But if it's what you wanna do then go for it while you can :)
