I'm hoping to attend the Open Golf Championship this weekend. I intend to travel by train on Friday and return home on Monday. I am basically searching frantically for somewhere to pitch a single man tent for 3 nights and need to be within walking distance of the golf course. I know I'm a numpty for leaving it last minute but does anyone know of anywhere I can pitch my tent? Even if it is your back garden :) !

I really think you'll struggle. The caravan sites over by the East (West?) Sands may have somewhere for you to pitch your tent but I can't think of any places which are specifically set up for camping.

There are plenty of fields near the Old Course if you wanted to go for something less, ahem, official. By which I mean legal.

You could consider camping at one of the towns/villages that aren't too far away from St Andrews, they're a bit more likely to have some space and you should be able to get a bus in the mornings to take you there.

You'll be lucky :p

afaik the campsites are full! B&B's are all booked too.

I suggest Red Bull, Pro Plus and just stay awake for 3 days straight :)

Just camp outside St Andrews, do it somewhere secluded bushes are best, off the road. Not agricultural land, **** of the farmers.

If a farmer comes along, appologise offer to move on and or offer him money for you to stay at the same time. Tell him you will be tidy leave no mess.

If the police come, tell them you've already spoke to the farmer. ;)

Walk into town.

Sorted.

Wouldn't it a fair ploy to get accommodation in dundee or edinburgh and get a bus in, i think you can stay in hostels for cheap. Just an idea if you can't find a place. I assuming most of the accommodation in st andrews will be booked out, maybe not though.

Get arrested for being drunk and disorderly every night? You could seriously stealth camp pretty easily near the beach or in one of the fields surrounding St Andrews. Failing that, Dundee isn't too far away on the train.

Edinburgh's a bit far imo (given it's a shade over an hour on the bus)

Train from Dundee is a good plan. Until the train stops 5 miles short of St.Andrews :p

For future reference wild camping is legal in Scotland, we have different acts and codes that apply but the important bits are:

You must be considerate and take away anything you take to camp.

You have access under the right to roam and land reform act excluding private property such as house gardens, school grounds etc. However you can camp on farm land, except where crops are sowed, growing or grown. however a common sense approach should be used when camping on farm land.

There are some prohibited areas, Loch Lomond has a couple. These are mainly protected because too many people camp there and it's damaging the land. These are normally sign posted however. You may also legally camp on the roadside as long as you are not posing a dange to road users.

Interesting actually. However, I not sure I brave enough to be totally on my own in the wilds.

One other thing I did forget to ask, I don't suppose there is anyone from the Liverpool area travelling up on the Friday who I could hitch a lift with? :p

What Windle said ^

I was about to come in and suggest camping up at the end of west sands beach, its about a mile long so would probably get a good bit of peace and quiet out there.

Oh and the train from Dundee is a stupid idea. There are buses that go direct from dundee to st andrews every 15 mins, take 25 mins and would cost considerably less.
