Anyone here like to play guitar??

Ive been playing since around may-june... i can finally play a song 'Wild Thing' im trying to expend on it now though.. trying to learn something better, something slow though and not very advance as im still learning...

Ive got a Stagg SW201 in redburst, only retailing at like 60 but its nice, very nice. Im after an electro acoustic tho tbh... recomendations?

any opinions??

Im on a certain ultimate guitar website if anyone if willing to look me up, link in my profile.

Anyone else got any interesting stories about them selves? how good they are? what you can play? any vids? mp3 of yourself? theres an mp3 of me on my ug pro which is in my profile...

check me out, let me know what you think, pos feedback needed!!

Any tips?? post them here.

James.

I do indeed play guitar. Been playing for a while now, although never had the time to put into it that i'd have liked.

A good idea is to try and learn something you like. It doesn't matter if they song is fast or slow, you can always slow down the audio and keep the pitch using something like Audacity (free audio editing software).

As you already have a guitar, it might be worth just concentrating on that foor a while. Unless you really want to concentrate on acoustic, i'd just stick with the electric.

I didn't have the luxury of having the option of another guitar when I was learning, I had to settle for a 40 quid Argos jobbie for a couple of years. :)

If you're really bored, have a look at uk.myspace.com/iansden, that's my page and has some of my tunes on it.

Wild Thing contains the 3 chords of the world famous "Three chord trick" and millions of songs have been (and will be) written around those 3 chords.
It doesn't matter if its E A D, G C D, A D E, C F G etc its still the 3 chord trick.
I had the good fortune to play guitar for Chuck Berry and the whole of his set is based on the 3 chord trick even though every song had a different starting chord.
A lot of people think Status Quo are 3 chord merchants and even they are taking the pee out of themselves with the new album 'In Search of the 4th Chord' but a lot of their songs are quite complicated (it doesn't help that every song also has a different tuning).

Ha, i know! 3 chords!! do you know any more decent songs that i can play? 3 chords songs pref :P

Im gonna have a look at some of Status Quo's songs,

do you play?

James.

3 chords...? Pfff, I can beat that. How about a song with only 2 chords? ;)

For What It's Worth by Buffalo Springfield is played using only open E and open A chords. Have a look here.

Also, the Guitar Noise site has a bunch of other songs that are good for people just starting out with the guitar... http://www.guitarnoise.com/easy.php

House of the Rising Sun is another easy one to learn, as is Time of Your Life by Greenday.

I've got a folder full of tabs that I've printed out over the years, I'll try and have a look to find some of the stuff I started learning with.

Ha, you guys are class!

I was on UG and i asked and they are all pretty, erm, stuburn? you know, they play so they dont really wana help newbies...

Some guys are nice, but they just give the same advice, wer as you 3 have given me some good useful info, like 3 chord songs, thats what i need atm, just to get me going, my upstroke strumming is crap, so i need practice before i go onto a decent fast paced song...

Yeah, just take it nice and slow for the moment... concentrate on being able to change between chords as cleanly as possible rather than as quickly as possible. The more you practice the quicker you'll become, so pay attention to doing it right to start with and you'll naturally get quicker.

Also, practice regularly. Playing for 15 minutes every day is better than playing once a week for an hour in one go.

What sort of music do you want to be able to play?

House of the Rising Sun is another easy one to learn,

Back in the late 60's, House Of The Rising Sun was the sure way to get you a job in a band.
I still have a memory of my Dad in the 60's at Butlins playing HOTRS on the grass while dozens of people crowded around him thinking he was amazing.
Him and his mate entered the talent show and won a free weeks holiday because they played HOTRS.

hey there,

just wondering if the chords you are playing are power chords like E5 A5 D5, if so i suggest you learn some open chords like Gmaj Amin Cmaj etc. i know it looks tough but the learning curve at the start of your guitar playing goes up really quick.

developing the chord changes to fluent and fast will stop you looking for 3 chord songs there is no reason why you can't then to go on and play some jazz :P

put an hour in a day just practicing through open chords, this will develop the strength in your fingers, furthermore, when you get more confident and start playing barre chords these chords resemble the shapes used in some open chords making life much easier.

i've been playing for nearly ten years and ahve taught several people ot play guitar and main hurdle was developing strength and a 'chord bank'

another technique for buidling up strength (although slightly boring) is to 'finger a fret'

start with first finger, first fret on the bottom E (thickest string) and pick the string, then 2nd finger 2nd fret, 3rd finger 3rd fret and 4th finger 4th fret. then do it for each string. when you get to top E (the thinniest string) go backwards.

you will eventually need all your fingers strong later down the line as you start developing your chords, lead playing.

in terms of songs, espeically to practice open chords try:
knocking on heavens door
hey joe
oasis stuff ain't bad
polly by nirvana

hope that gives you a few pointers!

Idealy i want to play things like Kaiser Chiefs (saw these headline at T4, rocked!!!!!) Foo Fighters, id like to be able to play Oasis, and eventually i want to be able to do either covers or acoustic versions of my fav songs, i.e. foundations by kate nash, id like to get that in acoustic and learn that one, i recon thats a good one to learn as id stick at it.

I want to play music like Linkin park, scouting for girls, UB40, nickleback, orson, the feeling, ACDC... more which i cant remember...

I get inspired very very easily...

Ideally though the 1st 3 listed and some covers of Kate Nash would make me very happy...

When i lived in devon my mate got me into guitars... He was amazing, he should be playing pro, i dont know why the hell he isnt, he learns songs within days of hearing them, he is an amazing payer, he showed me how to play wild thing and taught me the rythm. He didnt think he was good, but everyone knows he was amazing, had like 4 guitars, all tuned differently, he was bery inspiring..

But there yago you know what type of music i like and want to learn.

Cheers,

James.

Cool, there are some songs that you'll be able to learn nice and quickly that you listed there. The Oasis songs are good for that, there are a few that don't even need to be able to play barre chords (where you stretch your first finger over multiple strings) like Whatever.

The Oasis songs are good for that

Well i learnt the chorus of "Champagne Supernova", but fogot what chords they are so i dont know it no more...

Oasis are good though, there songs are very clear and a lot of the chords are simple ive found, "Wonderwall" is a song that i want to learn! I got pretty annoyed at the fact that i couldnt do it, i was struggling so ive sort of thought i should try something new untill i get better at strumming, its a lot fo up and down strokes in that song and im struggling with my up stroke, i tend to just sit here now though when i practice and just strum up and down, not holding a chord, just some simple practice.

For ACDC you need to learn the chords of A and D - I know because my own band does 9 ACDC tunes :D

Got any demos?

Nearly forgot.... some U2 songs are nice and easy to learn too :)

Ill check them out also.

Cheers again guys,

Keep it coming though... :P

Have a look on YouTube for a guy called Justin Sandercoe (he's the guitarist for Katie Melua) as he does some lessons and also explains how to play some songs. Seeing someone explain how to play a song is easier than trying to work it out from a web page alone.

There are videos of some individual songs that are easy to play, such as Mr Jones by the Counting Crows, that you might not think of normally.

His site is www.justinguitar.com

I basically learnt how to play from his site/videos! Highly recommended!

I play guitar, been playing since I was 6, I'm now 16, and I completed Grade 8 three years ago. So I'm pretty good.

If you want/need any advice feel free to mail me.

I'd recommend saving up for a decent non-electric acoustic.

Then when necessary you can buy a pickup for it (eg: I-Beam) which will sound infinitely better than the cheap pups in standard electrocoustics.

You'll also get a better quality guitar, with better materials.
