Just out of curiosity, thought I'd ask.

Personally it seems a nice thing to "run away to", and the constant and relentless work would certainly take the mind of "outside" woes.

Maybe for when I'm older :D

I think if you told that to the recruiter he'd strangle you with his Kepi Blanc!

Are they actually any good in actual wars?

Can't say that I am, although I wouldn't mind trying out the training military units have to go through at least once in my life.

Does this exist so that when the normal French Army surrender, they send in the foreigners? :p

I guess. Nice option to have though.

What exactly is so appealing in being a soldier that works like a dog and being treated poorly while doing menial tasks just to deprive them of their free time? It's all nice and well talking about it but give it a try and see how different things are.

Focus on the problem you have and try to solve it, deflecting it by occupying yourself with something different is not going to make you feel better and you can bet those 'woes' will still bother you whatever you do.

One of my closest friends used to be in legion for 5 years I think it was and I believe the fact they have never won a conflict is a matter of pride and importance! Well that and getting your jumps in so you get paid.

Some people crave authority, others repel it.

You are right however, running away from your problems is not the best solution.
