Anyone know about custom-built arcade sticks?

I really want an arcade stick, but I'm also feeling really practical at the moment, so I figure I'll give a shot at making one myself!

I've seen the slagcoin site, which seems really helpful, but I can't see anywhere I could get hold of the PCB from a PS3 to use as a basis for the stick. Has anyone done anything like this for PS3 and could maybe give me some platform-specific guidance to get me off the ground with regard to scoring parts and stuff?

I've just been trying to get to shoryuken - their servers are busy right now. Is that the thread for the Cthulu thing? Think I might get one of those. Cheers for that gremlin link.
 
Thanks much for that link Chaos - that guy's linked to a wicked looking box maker. Think I'm definitely going to give this a go with one of their boxes and the Cthulu PS3 PCB thing. Then it's just a matter of which parts/colours to go for.

I'm not sure how I feel about being this excited about an arcade stick
 
Why have an arcade stick as opposed to a controller? I'm not knocking it, just wondering what the attraction is.

I've got one and it's perfect for what you want.
Was lucky enough to get one from the guy who came up with it, don't think he sells them direct anymore, but if you look on shoryuken.com they're bound to list a supplier or two.

Word of warning though, I've built my own stick once before, but even so,my current stick is slow going and expensive If you're just after having a stick it's probably cheaper and definately easier to buy one!!!!!! And , yes, it's still cheaper to buy the sf4 te stick.

From my point of view, I prefer the way sticks handle. I find it difficult doing down-to-left and charge-left-right movements with the pad and, even though I could get it with practice, I'd rather just play with a stick!

@Chris what do you mean when you say "slow going"? I realise it'd probably be easier to buy one, but I'd need 2 and the tools I'd have to buy would get used doing DIY so I figure it'll average out reasonable enough.

I've really wanted to do something practical for a while, and this seems to fit so I want to give it a go (which has had a lot of influence on that obviously!)
 
suppose it depends on your skills and the resorces available to you.
You don't need to be great at woodwork ,but you do need to be competant or like in my case have somone competant around to advise . Plus you need decent tools and as with anything , th more you spend the easier it'll be to get the desired result.

Then obviously you need the right parts and the knowledge and ability to wire it all up (by far the easiest part of your project ).

In my case, i knew exactly the graphic i wanted but have no artistic ability or relevant software for the job, so i had to comission some guy from a custom arcade web site to put one together, then had to get it printed at a local print.

It's all good fun and i can't wait to get it all finished, but building a stick should be viewed as a hobby in itself and as a labour of love as opposed to simply an alternative to buying one.

you could also get a pre built case from norris arcade
although demand will be high right now due to sf4 and the jostick/buttons will likely be delayed as well

im oddly excited buy custom build and am very tempted to buy some parts and build a few myself
hell i have a ps3 te stick, two ps3 hori sticks and a 360 sf4 arcade stick on there way to me yet i still aint even purchased the game as the old xbox/ps3 dilemma has got me
