Anyone got an idea what the running costs of leaving your computer on are in terms of your electricity bill?

Do they make a noticeable contribution to the monthly bill. I am presuming things like washing machine, diswasher, kettle, toaster etc are much more expensive.(because of moving parts, heat elements etc).

I don't know, but since I been running my mac mini I know my mum and dad love the cheaper prices lol

Roughly to run a 400watt PSU it will use 1 KWh in 2.5 hrs.

This is 1 unit of electricity.

therefore in 24 hrs it will be roughly 10 units.

at 8p per unit that makes it 80p per 24hours

thats assuming its on full blast all the time.

if you simply leave it on and it does nothing, then the processor will throttle back to save power, and the graphics card will be turned down immensely.

i suspect that if you leave that rig in your sig on overnight edward, it will cost no more than leaving a couple of lightbulbs on overnight

that doesnt matter. the PSU only takes what power it needs from the wall. if your computer has a 1200W PSU, but is only needing 200W, it will only draw 200W (+ whatever power the PSU wastes as heat)

Thanks. :)

So what would something like a Q6600 at 3.4 with 4gb dd3 ram, one Velociraptor and a pathetic 3450 consume? (Roughly)

My rig uses about 130W idle. It's an i7 920 rig overclocked to 3.5 with 1.1v and a HD6950 along with 3 Hard Drives.

So that's 130 Watts x 24 hours = 3.120kWh. At 12p per kWh that works out as 36p per day or around £10 per month, £30 per quarter.

It's not that much but you'd surely notice an extra £30 off your leccy bill.

I switch mine off at night and it goes to sleep when I'm not using it. So I probably only use £15 per quarter plus whatever my gaming load is.

A PC will only draw what it needs from a PSU. You could have a 50kw PSU and if you rig only drew 120W then that's all it'll provide depending on it's efficiency.

Why is almost every body wanting to know what it costs to run a PC, l wonder how maney of yous have the tv on or somthing else running and you never really watch the tv as your on your PC, switch it off or anyother thing you don't need on.

If you build a PC and it costs x amount to run you have just got to except it or get your self a cheap lap top.

At uni our flat is on a sort of "pay as you go" top up system so it's very easy to see exactly how much electricity we are getting through and when I brought my pc up we started burning through £10 a week as opposed to every week and a half. Made quite a difference.

just to put this into perspective, the PC about £130 a year
an average usage for a sky+ box works out about £25 a year
using our kettle on average 10 times a day £52 a year
a 5 minute shower a day £36 a year
my 60"plasma that we seem to have on in the background all the time (avg 10 hrs a day) £120 a year
and of course don't forget the pc's monitor using about £32 a year

so yes the PC does use allot but in this arena where we are all overclocking everything to within a inch of its life trying to squeeze the most performance out....... who cares.:p

My PC constantly draws 280w... unless I enable the speedstep feature then it powers down to 170w.

Ive noticed the ASUS AI Nap feature doesnt seem to do much except turn the screen off, still consume 170w.
