I was at an air-show when I was a sprog (thats some years ago) and a vulcan did the usual flyby and then pointed skyward and opened the throttles.
That video in another post (tho nice to watch) does not do the sound justice.
I can remember the ground shaking (my elder sister was in tears) and boy what a noise.
That video doesn't seem to have the crackling roar I remember.
Likewise, I've been going to airshows since I was 5 or 6 - jeez, that's over 30 years now - and I was privileged to see these beauties flying on many occasions. They're so damn big you wonder how something that size can defy the laws of physics as well as they do.
The only planes that came close to the Vulcan for sheer noise and spectacle were seeing the SR71 flying at Mildenhall one year and a B1 going along the crowdline, wings folded, at just under the speed of sound.
There's nothing to match watching a jet climb at full power, with the ground shaking so hard it makes your ribs rattle ... totally addictive
