Just wondering if anyone has any experience in learning sign language?(preferably BSL)

My local college does a part time course for learning the basics and it's something I've been interested in doing for a while. Would it be harder to learn than another spoken language? Also, if you get to grips with grammar is it easy enough to learn vocabulary in your own time?

I've got no personal experience I'm afraid mate - but my g/f's brother is at Wolverhampton Uni just about to finish his BSL interpreters course.

He has done a lot of learning outside of his course, watches a lot of "See Hear" and signed TV shows that he records. However, that said he has done a few public events and its' been commented that some people thought he was deaf until he spoke! - Apparently compliments don't get a lot better than that for a hearing person.

To sum it up, I'd say its probably no harder to get to grips with than another language - but if you want to look into it seriously, just be prepared that there is a lot of "work" involved in it (feels less like work if you enjoy it though)

I dont think sign language has all the grammar and stuff we do. I did a short course on it once. Seriously how can you put a full stop in a "sign sentance"

There was this thing in school when I was there, which was the sign language (apparently) for 'why don't you **** off' :o I have no idea how accurate it is to real sign language, though. :p

My local college did a BSL level 1 course when I was in 6th form, so I decided to do it. I actually picked it up quite easily and if you practice quite often you should pass no problem!
