anyone learn to touchtype?

I went on a secretarial typing course as an after school activity (some 20 years ago) - although I got stick from my peers I was able to do over 140wpm.

Just did a test now and am 106wpm which I was quite pleased with.

Definitely one of the best skills I left school with - I do feel sorry for kids these days as most of their in-class technology experience is going back to the single finger typing but on touch screens. This is not going to improve spelling/grammar one bit IMO.

I can do about 60 on a good day!

Isn't the world record near that?

I've somehow gone further and type with one hand. Not as quickly as a touch typist, but I'm no slower one handed than my colleagues using both hands. It does look hilarious and comments regarding my 'retarded fingers' are abound. Does wonders for not letting the coffee get cold whilst you forget it though!

Same. :D

The best one, and I have no idea how I do this as a male, is to hold a conversation with a colleague whilst still being able to touch type a perfectly coherent email and not look at your keyboard / screen. :p

Our computer class at school was basically learning to touch type. I hated it so never bothered.

Besides, it apparently doesn't make much of a difference anyway:

The number of fingers does not determine typing speed, new study shows. People using self-taught typing strategies were found to be as fast as trained typists.
Researchers from Aalto University studied the typing behavior of 30 people covering a broad range of age and skill. Their findings challenge the common belief that you need to have taken a touch typing course – to learn how to type with all 10 fingers – in order to be fast

What's weird is that, so long as I don't think about it I can touch type pretty quickly. However, once I start thinking I get all muddled up.

weird, its never something I've really thought about, usually I look at the keyboard at the start to get a reference point then I just start typing until I make a mistake then I usually have to reset myself by looking at the keyboard again, not entirely sure what my wpm would be but im sure its fairly high, must be above 80 ... must check it out later.

Never learned how to do it formerly, however as I've used computers from a young age I've just kind of picked it up. I think gaming also really helped with that as you memory map a lot of the more important keys.

I generally sit at about 100 to 110 wpm. I also touch type on my phone but, while I can do it I find it harder on a tablet.

I just kind of taught myself to touch type when i was a kid but as a result of many hours of Counter Strike, my left pinky pretty much lives over the left column of keys and the other three fingers do most of the left side while my thumb is for space, V, B, and N. Right hand fills the gaps. Seems to work OK as I've never had any RSI-type stuff

sigh, it seems that most people who type with 2 fingers and learnt to ype very fast using this method, think that they are touch typing.

With proper touchtyping you can type withoout looking at the keyboad AND looking at the screen either, you can write an entire paragraph this way with 100% accuracy and without using the backspace to correct yourself.

I can type using the two finger method without looking at the keyboard for a sentence or so, but I will occasionally miss press. I certainly cant use any of the punctuation method this way.

Just kind of picked it up due to having to type a lot at work ... used to freak out the guy sitting at the desk next to me as I could turn and talk to him whilst typing away quite normally.
