Anyone live in a new build flat?

I've lived in cold homes and I've lived in hot homes, personally I much prefer cold homes - heating in this country is pretty good, cooling not so good. I guess the great summers of 2003 and 2005 were just so unpleasant I am scarred by the memories of them.

You have AC in the UK? Did you install it yourself or was it pre-installed by the builder?

Yep, AC in the UK (bizarre I know). We didn't install, the developer put into every flat. Rarely gets hot enough to use, I recall about 10 occasions we've used it. Costs a bit in maintenance as well to boot.

What about what alx says - makes in difficult for hot air to escape. This is what I suspect is the case, as said in the OP my old man reckons better insulation is the solution to the problem.

Insulation will work both ways as it reduces heat transfer - it will keep in and keep heat out. However, once heats gets into a well insulated building (i.e. on a sunny day with south facing windows etc) it's then difficult to cool the building down again.

People often say you want a flat/house where you have windows on both sides of the property so you can get a breeze through it to aid with cooling.

Lived in a late 2000 build last year. Was 2nd floor so had someone above and below me. Just opened the doors (Juliette balcony) to get some air though if too hot but it was never so bad that i would have to sit in front of an open freezer.
Winter was toasty thanks to my neighbours.

Last flat I lived in was built mid 2000's, was on ground floor. Like others not too bad in winter, in the summer though it did get very hot. I used to open a window at either end and wedge the doors open to get a through draft going on.

2007 ground floor for me and it's boiling all year round. Heating is used for a few minutes a day in winter which suffices. Windows remain open at all times!

I agree with people that in theory good insulation should keep a place cool too but it doesn't work like that for my flat.

It's top floor, south facing and has two big sky lights. Its very "airy" and pleasant and needs very little heating in winter. However, in summer it becomes almost unbearable.

It was built in 2007.

My 2005 flat (at least for the next 2 weeks im in th middle of moving) has always been toasty in the winter and not too bad in the summer.

The insulation is very good using that kingspan foil backed plasterboard modular stuff that murders wireless and mobile phone reception. in the summer i have balcony that over looks fields so i just leave the door open most of the time.

Temp isnt the thing you should be worrying about with a flat it's the robbin managment companys who will charge you over £100 a month for some polish bloke to come round and mop the stairs every other week.
