Anyone opt for game controller on pc over mouse + KB?

I prefer the 360 pad for justcause2, thats only cause i fail at flying planes and stuff other wise and its just easier to use you grapple hook and stuff. but for other games. Definatly keyboard and mouse.

The only issue like this I found was with GTA San San Andreas, I'd played it extensively on my PS2 (which died shotly before getting a PC capable of running it). However, playing it with a keyboard & mouse just didn't feel right at all, and I ended up buying a 2nd hand PS2 controller and a USB adapter so I could play using the pad again.

Having been a pc gamers since 1997 and after recently buying a PS3 i have started to have thoughts that I never dreamed I would! It is actually fun to play games with a joypad!

I started gaming with a keyboard, then advanced to a joystick (which really made no difference for 2d sideways scrolling, isometric and top-down gaming). I got a keyboard and mouse with the PC and never looked back. Lol @ fps with a controller; only good for street fighter games.;)

reforming console gamer here, so I do tend to default to the controller more than I should. I do try & stick with the keyboard & mouse, but if i get stuck or just suck at the game & end up back on the controller. Thanks to games like mass effect 2 & bioshock 2 that have no controller support I am getting better with KB & mouse.

Some games are better with controller though, diving games & 3rd person like batman AA, devil may cry etc. couldn't imagine playing them with KB & mouse

I got a 360 controller a few months ago and I really enjoy using it. For platformer games and flying/driving games it is absolutely excellent - sometimes you really need a few analogue controls to get things right.

As for FPS games, I have tried but I find I get so much more precise control with the mouse + Keyboard, I find this adds to the immersion.

You mention playing on the couch with a controller - but you can easily do this with a wireless laser mouse and a wireless keyboard like this. Its not quite as elegant as a gamepad, but it does work and IMHO give you more precise control in many situations.

I was playing CS:S earlier, and looked down to see my xbox360 controller sitting there lonely after being used for PES2010.
I picked it up, fiddled around with the control settings and then set off to kill the filthy terrorists.
It was a total nightmare. Just couldn't get the thing to do what I wanted it to do.

Though earlier in the day I was playing Rainbow Six Vegas 2 with it and it felt OK.
I guess the more 'arcadey' games work ok but proper FPS do not.

I'll probably only use it (only bought it this week) for driving, flying and football games.

Why anyone would chose a pad over K&M is beyond me when gaming on a PC, only thing I use a 360 controller for is racing games. K&M feels natural where as a pad just feels weird I remember trying to play Mass Effect on my Xbox when I had and I just gave up as I got sick and tired of running into walls and just totally frustrated with it, now i'm playing it on my PC and its a totally different experiance

How many people take the time to get used to the controller for shooters though?

I was a long-time pc exlusive gamer, until just over 2 years ago when I got a 360, and then later a PS3.

In the beginning I sucked with a contoller too, but persevered and now would say I am pretty damn good with it. And I have come to enjoy sitting back to play games rather than sitting closer to the screen.

Mouse and Keyboard just feels so mechanical to me.

I use my xbox 360 controller for PES and GRID but I prefer the keyboard and mouse for Batman, Tomb Raider and GTA4. The advantage of the mouse to pinpoint exactly where I want to look is second to nothing. Whilst I don't disagree the easy reach of controller buttons perhaps outweighs the keyboard, I do find spinning the camera around with my thumb frustrating.

I find the controller to be way more work than it is worth in shooting games. With a mouse it only takes a split second to line up your shot, with a controller I have to fiddle around. It's an endless cycle of trying to get that crosshair over the enemy, it skips over to the left, I try to nudge it over to the right and it goes too far, so I have to move at the slowest pace until it's lined up. Might only take a second or two, but the frustration just adds up after a few enemies.

This isn't true for games that were designed for the controller, because they just aim for you. I was watching a mate play Red Dead Redemption, GTAIV and CoD the other day and I couldn't believe how little input he actually had. The crosshair snapped to the enemy upon aiming and just tracked them, for me that is a real immersion killer.
