Anyone ordered/imported stuff from US? (customs and tax question)

Cheers for all the info.

Couldn't really get all of the stuff in the UK so hence the US order. The significantly cheaper prices were a factor too ;-)

Looks like I'm going to be stung for import tax and VAT as well as handling fees. I think I might cancel the order :-(

BTW, courier is FedEx International Priority.

Got lucky with my ipad and didn't get charged for some reason, but as a rule of thumb, yes expect a hefty charge.

If it's Fedex International Priority then it's come via courier and they will send you a bill to the delivery address for any outstanding charges, and it is extremely likely you will be charged. I think, it's been a while since I've used them (the Rainforest's Japanese site uses them for international orders), that their admin charge is £6, then you'll have your duty and vat on top of that.

When you get the invoice check all the breakdowns are correct ... in particular that they haven't added a completely fictitious shipping charge on top of the actual item cost and shipping charge. They did that to me a couple of times and as that adds to the total which they work out the charges from it meant that the amount I was charge was very wrong ... phoned them and got them to sort it out (and wave the admin charge as they'd made a mistake :)). You can phone them up and pay the charges over the phone (details on the invoice).
