Faults or interesting stories from either?

Looking to buy one of the above shortly as a commuter/toy.

Dad owns a DRZ400E which is set up for full motorcross use but road reg'd.
Ridden that a few times but its just a little to soft/wet for full on hooning on the roads ;) although it wheelies well :D

edit: Ive had my full bike licence since 17 and have had all sorts of bikes since then, got rid of my last one to get my Astra Turbo but im bored and need more thrills. 280BHP in a car is just not fun enough for me anymore once you get used to it.

I like loud thumpers but even i have a limit. Did the one you rode have an open can on it?

Whats the power delivery of it like? I assume as its the twin carb/port freewind engine it should be quite snappy and crisp.

it felt ok to me,but im used to sports bikes,it had decent pull,im not sure if it was the stock can, it was just headache loud,i like load cans myself but that was an annoyance more than a nice sound,i noticed the vibration too

I have an Sukuki powered R30 and love it to bits.. I've had it around two years now and don't plan on changing it for anything else anytime soon.

Vibration: It's a big single and so it's in their nature.

Power: They are pretty snappy, mine doesn't like to be sitting at a set speed unless in a gear that gives 4+ k rpm.. It's just not a gentle cruse along sort of machine, it wants to be worked and is very eager to pull.

Noise: Mine is not too bad, I can't tell you what it's got fitted as it has no markings at all but it's not the Remus can that's usualy factory fitted. Often folk fit Quill T3's or Evo2's which are a fair bit louder than the Remus, but I rode a pals machine fitted with an an unbaffled Evo2 from Yeovil to High Wycombe.. It didn't bother my head, just my backside :D

Main Issues:
Base gasket on the Suzuki lump, although 99.99% should now have the uprated version fitted. You can tell if it's got the uprated gasket by looking around the edge and you will find in several areas a bit of gasket sticking out with a metal ring rivet fitted.
Lower rose joint of rear shocker, don't let these seize as they can snap the joint off of the swingarm. It's a maintainance issue or rather lack of.
