Hi folks, I've currently got a Macbook Pro which I've been using for about three years for general uni work, MAMP, email, browsing etc and a home built PC which I use for gaming and when I had to do some stuff in Visual Studio for uni.

My course is just about to finish, and I'm tempted by a top of the range iMac 27" while I can still get the further education discount. Pretty much the only game I play these days is WoW on the pc - I know it's an old game, and not particularly graphics intensive, but I've heard conflicting reports of how well the 27" Imac can handle the game when raiding (most people think it's fine in less intensive parts of the game). Anyone here have personal experience of this, or any other comments about the machine (heat, reliability etc).

Thanks.

As for performance, i play WoW on a Dell 2407WFP at it's native rez of 1920x1200 and my macbook pro unibody using the 9600GT, does a sterling job. It's very playable and i'm surprised how well it runs. I'm sure a top of the range iMac would run it no problems at all!

I concur what Logsi says as to regards you will have no problems. Im running a mid 2009 24" iMac with top of line gfx card and WoW runs like a dream.

You wont have problems.

I was mainly concerned that the 4850 gfx card may struggle at the 27" iMacs 2560 x 1440 resolution - I've seen a few posts where people have said it lags when a lot is going on in-game, while others say it's fine.

Really the only things that seem to be intensive in WoW are view distance (flying across Northrend), Anti Aliasing of course, and then shadows.

With all these on low it still looks great and I imagine even the most basic of GFX cards can handle it! I used to run at 1920x1080 from my laptops 7900GT and it was great :)

I had the same thoughts as you. I switched a couple of weeks ago to the Core i7 27".

Wow runs great. I turned the shadows down to minimum and kept rest at full. Full res without AA and it runs at 60fps in dala 90% of the time. 5 man dungeons are buttery smooth as are 10 man. 25 man raids can get a bit choppy in ICC when everyone is going balls out but I havnt experimented with anything to improve this yet.

That was my biggest worry when switching but all I can say is go for it!!

Ps. I swicthed from a 4Ghz i7, 5870, 128Gb SSD so I was in effect downgrading quite a bit.
