Anyone Rebuilt an Engine?

Rebuilt a few VX 20XE engines. Still have one that one day will be put to use. A good way to learn is to take it apart and have a look and these days using your phone and taking pictures along the way will be helpful when you rebuild.

Thanks for the replies. I am having seconds thoughts but if the 7MGTE in my Supra goes pop then a 2JZ is definitely replacing it and even if I don't build it I would definitely like to fit it myself.

Built a few engines, only thing ive never done is removed/fitted valves and springs. Always sent the head away to get it checked and the valves springs and ports done at the same time.

Its much easier now days with the wealth of knowledge on the internet. I used to build them with haynes manuals!

Stripped and rebuilt a Mountfield lawnmower engine a few years back but drew the line at that, it still ran years later but never had the tools nor space for a car engine and most likely lacked the ability!

Done some bike engines now. Mostly top end rebuild stuff. Messed about with glow engines back in the day too.
Fiddled with some car engines a bit but nothing too complicated. Usually just replacing/bodging broken bits to work again. (Fan clutch, water pumps, thermostats/etc)
Got a gearbox on a bike to do next, which is new territory, I just try to break stuff down and use guides online to get me through :)
Then it's time to do the valve stem seals (all 32 of them!) on my 750i, which are very knackered :D That's the one I am dreading. Special tools are needed and there is a kit to allow you to do it without removing the heads. Garages charge £2.5-3k labour at an Indy, and £5k minimum at BMW.
Should be good for another 60k once done :)

Head work gives you a whole new level of patience! A valve spring compressor makes light work of the springs but the little collets on the valve stems can be really testing at times. A dab of lithium grease and a long screwdriver makes the job a whole lot easier. Valve lapping is another one, takes a while! The end result is definitely worth it though and all that effort makes for a silky smooth sounding engine. I really enjoyed the head rebuilds I did.
