I've got myself a little gravel bike and have been pouring the miles on (did the Way Of The Roses last week, Morecombe to bridlington) but I have been using my 5-10 MTB shoes until now.

That coast to coast taught me one thing, the MTB shoes really make my feet hot and are very heavy, so I need a decent set of non-clippy shoes, anyone have any good recommendations?

I'm sill a pleb at road/gravel bikes and will probably end up falling over :)
I suppose clipon capable ones are okay if i can use them as non-clippy for now.

I was the same, went from mtb straight into clipping in. It's actually ok and you adjut seriously quick - espically on road/gravel bike. I know it's not the advice you asked for, sorry, but it's worth considering just jumping in. MTB spds are seriously quick to clip out of too, though I fell off on my 2nd ride out! Theres a lot more options available too, that are designed more at gravel rather than heavy mtb shoes.

Two friends have these;

Well the older version and I know one of them uses them when he rides flats too (infrequnetly though) but they seemed lighter than 510s. Though you could go lighter/cooler with a more xc gravel shoe, probably.

Ref cleats get the shimano multi release ones, can’t remember number but have big M in name. Basically have pedals set relatively loose and can just pull foot out about any direction, not just specific twist out etc. I’m just getting into cycling on gravel bike and was nervous like you but with these I’ve not fallen over…. Yet!

It's worth it. Falling over whilst still clipped in is a rite of passage. Just remember to do it somewhere quiet :D Mine was down a quiet country lane - I stopped, unclipped my left foot and but then leant over to the right. Had to take my shoes off to get up :D

My rite of passage falling off moment happened at the front of a queue of traffic at some traffic lights!
