Hello Pilgrims,

Im on holiday next month and im after a hd pocket camera. At the moment I have 2 choices..........

KODAK Zi8 HD Pocket Video Camera
JVC Picsio GC-FM1B Pocket HD Camcorder

The Kodak seems the better option going by some of the reviews Ive found but only does 5mp stills - the JVC does 8mp.

Anyone got any recommendations? Anything under £100 and using memory cards for storage as this keeps the size of the camera down.

Thanks people.

I have the ZI8 and it's a great little camera, but it could be better in the dark.

Put I wouldn't rate the still's at all, so if you want some stills images stick with a normal camera.

Thanks teaboy.

Have you updated the firmware? After doing a bit more digging I found you can upgrade the firmware to 1.06 which improves video quality in low-light.

This firmware version provides WINDOWS 7 compatibility and improves the following features: Audio recording and playback; Digital Zoom; User Interface; Video quality in low-light conditions.

If there are no more suggestions Ill order the Zi8 tomorrow.

Cheers ;)

Did a test video of the Zi8 this morning in 1080p - it come out quite good. Im happy with it :)

Looks better on the tv than on here tho.

What about cheap pistol grip camcorders that you can get for around the same price? Cameras like the Sanyo CG20. They're roughly the same price (probably cheaper than the new Zi8), but you get 5x optical zoom, much better autofocus, swivelling screen, removable battery and manual settings (like ISO, shutter speed etc). The only downside I can see is that it's not quite as convenient (no USB built in).

I've never understood why these types of cameras didn't take off compared to cameras like the Flip. Technically, they're better in pretty much every way, and are roughly the same size and price. Hardly ever see them though.
