I may not win any awards for cool guy of the year, but I thought I'd ask :p

After playing DoW for awhile, I feel like having another go at painting miniatures, havn't done it in over 10 years.
Managed to find some of them yesterday, most of them had been destroyed by an act of God (cupboard door feel of it's hinges and squashed them). Looking at my previous painting attempts, I've seen better work on a nursery wall :o

I'm wrestling with myself over my geeky past and whether to have another go, or throw out all my miniatures and pretend it never happened.

there is absolutely nothing wrong with building and painting them imo, however, grown men playing the no PC game seems to be frowned upon.

I myself have quite a few of these and once the house is sorted and my cars are out of the garage i may take it back up as a hobby.

Once a patron of the chaos gods always a patron of the chaos gods…

I stopped about 7 years ago when I just didn’t have the time and money to justify the expense. Thankfully whenever the geek gains a foothold and I contemplate restoring my faith one quick glance at the outrageous prices soon reseals it again.

I really do enjoy converting and painting the models as its very relaxing while also being constructive but the money involved is just ridiculous now.

never thought about selling the painted models on ebay?

Its been a while since i last looked but they used to sell very well on there!

Still got all my models up the loft and the paints and inks. Some of my best models were Necromunda - but I did a set of the horsemen from LOTR for a friend a year or two ago and he was pretty amazed at the quality of the painting. Nice to see I'm good at something. :)

I still do (im 24) and a lot of the gamers I know are between this age and older. Mainly due to cost reasons. I stopped when i thought it was too 'sad' to do it but upon growing up i realised its something i like to do, and is no different to my mates at work who play snooker as a social activity. not to say i dont enjoy a game of that too.

If youre seriously interested check out www.swchq.co.uk we are a friendly bunch, and organise campaigns and meets.

I was playing DOW and liked the looks of the Tau but was resisting the urge to get involved in Warhammer again.
I Managed to avoid the urge when my brother had a friend over (they were going to Games Day the next day), but admired the Tau.

I got roped into taking younger brother to Games Workshop to pick up some bits for his Chaos Marines.
I ended up walking out the door with the Tau Megaforce, army book, and a rather confused expression on my face :p

I've currently got most of that set painted up to a basic standard (very basic) as I needed to get them done for a weekend round a friend of my brothers - about 12 of us playing games (some of the models my brothers friends have are amazing).

I'm currently painting the Piranha's, then I've got 18 Kroot, 3 stealth suits, a devil fish and a skyray to do for my Tau (I may buy a dozen kroot hounds).
One tip I did pick up was if you are doing Tau battlesuits, or Marine tanks it's worth looking at Neodymium magnets to allow you to change the config of the weapons (with the marine tanks it lets you buy one tank model and by using magnets rather than glue swap it from a troop carrier to full tank).
It also lets you place things like Tau Drones on flying bases, but take them off for transport (1mm magnet in top of flaying base support, 2mm in bottom of drone).

I've also got an Empire army for Warhammer to paint up, I decided on them after having great fun with them whilst away - especially the bit where I took out a great eagle that was heading to attack my cannon, with the cannon ball hitting it mid fllight (and in close combat whacked it with the ramming rod to take it's last hit point).

I had a great time doing them - and not to blow my own trumpet, but I think they looked pretty sweet when they were done :D Some of them looked like the ones you buy pre-painted in the shop!

But the actual game... man I found it SO boring.

I was just in it for the cool looking toys :p

Plus it was a nice relaxing way to spend a day.

That's part of what appeals to me, something different to the PC that I can relax whilst doing it:)
If it also gives me an excuse to use some of the stuff in the garage, even better :)

I used to collect Imperial Guard, I've got hundreds of the buggers in the loft. Had to give up in the end as i just couldnt afford the prices. Me and my friends never really used to play the games, but prefer to just paint them, I found it far more enjoyable than trying to learn the 500 page rulebook.

Really must get round to selling them.

I used to paint Warhammer 40K figures, I remember it being a fairly inexpensive hobby, citadel paints are fairly reasonably priced, but this was in the day when Space Marines had pointy helmets and studded shoulderpads, (still the original Dreadnoughts were cool!)

I paint model aircraft these days, moving house has put the hobby on hold, much to my other half's relief!

I don't really have much interest in playing the game, though I do love reading all the lore and codexs :D

I'm thinking of hitting the games workshop over the weekend, but it's been so long I have no idea what to pick up, paints/inks etc. Also my less then impressive skills won't have improved over 10 years of inactivity, are they any online guides to painting? Techniques etc.
A video would be ideal :)

I use to collect 40k aswel, but that was about 4 years ago(13) got into it through my cousin, I really enjoyed painting it and I was good at that. I played the game once round my cousins with one of his mates and I found it very boring and stopped collecting ever since. I think when I have time I might take my old collection and repaint them again. :p Great for relaxing.

No interest in the tabletop whatsoever... but I can't get enough of the fluff... easily the coolest, grittiest and richest sci-fi/horror universe out there. Love it! :D

Besides, who needs tabletop when you have Dawn of War? ;)

Always an Imperial man myself, pretty sizable marine army and a half decent guard one as well. Gave up playing when the 3rd edition of the game was released. When I was in Cambridge last year a group of us at work got together and started playing again and I quite enjoyed it. 4th ed is much less complicated than (roll a dice to see who picks their nose) 2nd ed and moves pretty quickly. We found we could fit a 600 point game into our lunch hour without any difficulty
