Anyone temped with the HD 800 Headphones

Yes but a lot of R&D and cost to manufacture and research to get the best sound etc. If it was as simple as you imply then a £50 pair of headphones would sound as good as the HD800 HD650 etc. I agree that headphones are overpriced, as are most things... Especially HI-FI equipment.. But if they were THAT easy to make sound good then there would be no market for high end headphones because budget £20-£50 ones would be just as good (which they clearly are not)

"but remove all the extras and slap the speaker coils into a cheap shell and it would sound the same. " < Im sorry but that is not true either lol. In a cheap crappy shell you would get reverberations etc. Headphones such as LCD2 or HD800 or Beyerdynamic tesla etc. are overpriced though I agree.

Nice 3 year bump lakitu.

I don't agree they're overpriced. Audeze (I'm looking to get an LCD2 next) are a tiny company who make technically very impressive headphones (flat frequency response 20-2000 Hz!) from expensive materials (rosewood and lambskin leather) in a developed country (USA) and have incredible customer service and warranty (free upgrades to drivers etc.).

With a little profit on top I can see $1000 making sense. Not so sure about the LCD3 though at $2000 new. Flagship pricepoint more than anything I think.

Mmm yes they look nice but very bulky and heavy.... almost 3/4 of a KG on your head!

I would have the LCD2/3 over the HD800 because of the improved sub bass and smoother treble.

I havnt tried them but looking at the size and weight of them it does make you think that they might be rather uncomfortable after an hour or two. Anyway I dont have £1000 to spend on headphones so it is not a problem at the moment lol.
