Anyone transferred at LAX?

I’m going to have a 3hrs10 after arriving at Tom Bradley at LAX, before boarding a domestic flight from Terminal 7.

It’s not all on one ticket so I’ll need to do customs etc, collect my bag and come out. Then find my way to Terminal 7 which I’ve never been to before.

I’ve arrived into LAX plenty of times and totally aware it’s a hellscape at the best of times. Apparently there’s a shuttle, or I could just walk. Anyone done this by any chance?

According to some googling I can come out and walk in the same direction as the traffic. Which sounds.. vague!

Yes but I'm not going to be able to help you, although like yours was about 3 hours from memory it was the same terminal.

True story, I somehow by accident ended up in a secure area of the airport I wasn't supposed to be in, I went in one of the lifts and it opened into some bagging area place, and some mexican sounding guy was there, I sort of said sorry and went back and nothing further happened, this was only about a year after 9/11 as well.

Was also disappointed the McDonald's was identical to over here.

Presumably you're "fenced" in so you can't wander off. I usually prefer walking between the concourses if possible to stretch the legs, plus avoids being crammed into busses/trams, usually do this at T5.

I’m not “connecting” though so I feel like I’ll get my bag and exit the way I normally do into a waiting car… but instead walk along ‘somewhere’ until I find terminal 7

Did it once (LHR -> LAX -> KOA) and I would pay extra to never transfer at LAX ever again. The airport itself is fine but they didn’t have enough border gates open and the staff were all incredibly rude/unhelpful (“Tough **** if you miss your connection, you’ll have to book another flight”). We only made our 2.5 hour transfer because of the kindness of fellow travellers, who allowed us to queue jump them.

Perhaps we just caught them on a bad day. It put me right off though.

My experience is this can happen at any of the US hubs if you get unlucky with timing, and the attitude is the same. On the plus side, it's part and parcel of travel in USA so the airlines are ready for it and just stick you straight on the next flight with no fuss if you do miss the connection.

Just to update. This all went without a hitch. My main flight was on time (early even) so I had the full 3hrs to kill. Sauntered around to the other terminal area, got through security in 10mins and kept walking around so as not to fall asleep :p As ever with airports, I’d imagine if you had a bit less time, or the queues were a bit longer at security then it would get very stressful very quickly.

Glad to hear; had the same change in 2014.... and lost my transiting flight, which was the last flight out; so had to book a hotel for the night and travel next day.
