Just wondered who used a Mac for their daily corp/office laptop? not just home use or content creation, but as a general office daily use laptop (Specifically interested if anyone in an IT role is using one).

How do you find it and what issues (If any) do you encounter?

Yes, millions do it in all sectors, myself included. No issues whatsoever. They are incredibly popular in software engineering teams.

I use both my personal MacBook Air and a corporate MacBook Pro for work (I work for VMware). They're both excellent. The only issue is that there is no Visio for Mac, but there are alternates and there's always the option of running it in a VM.

My preferred working device is a MacBook.

That being said, the 13 inch Intel-based devices suck. Big time.

Absolutely choke if you try and run a few spreadsheets/teams call/web pages

But from a productivity perspective, I prefer them.

VMware Fusion is in tech preview for M1 based Mac’s. The downside is there currently isn’t tools available. I think there may be some from GitHub but they are not supported.

Gave it a try, it's in an abysmal state. I'd wager it needs at least another year to become usable for work.

Can you provide me specific feedback? I can forward it on to the TPM. He's very active on Slack and always welcomes feedback. PM/Trust if you wish.

I've started a new job today and I have a MacBook Pro. Hate it. :D

Nah it's not too bad, I've just never used a Mac before (ever) and there's a bit of a learning curve.

Wasn't a thorough test so can't provide specific bug reports, I just had stability issues with Ubuntu while running Python scripts. Also the UI stuff weren't playing nice (regular resolution issues, refresh rate was detected incorrectly, UI was just too slow and unresponsive, there were frame drops during animations), and CPU performance was significantly lower than expected (e.g. compared to Parallels).

You can make macOS behave like Windows with some apps and adjusting settings, the best advice is to just not do that. Instead put in the effort and figure out the way mac does things. Takes a little longer but after a while you'll see everything falls into place and there will be a consistency of experiences across most software that significantly boosts productivity in the long run.

Also, learn keyboard shortcuts as they are your best friend, and don't swap control and command keys to make it like Windows :D

Thanks, I'll message him next week when back in work. The problem we have as VMware, is most of the devs were laid off not long before M1 was a thing. And I guess for the higher ups, Fusion probably doesn't make us a load of money like our other products so it has been neglected somewhat sadly. That, and Microsoft being extremely reluctant to work with us (it's more of a case that they just ignore us) doesn't help matters.

Whereas Parallels as a company do one thing, so they're always going to be a step or two ahead.

BTW, I do not work on Fusion in anyway!

I almost did this this morning but yeah, I'm going to stick with it and see what all the fuss is about.
I can't put my finger on it but whenever I have to use Windows 10/11 now I just get annoyed with it. :D Focus in particular infuriates me. Not sure it's the right word but when something pops up over your active Window.

Oh no, I’ve just stumbled on the fact that there’s no Visio for Mac. What alternatives do you use, or would you just recommend going down the VM route?

Omnigraffle, Lucidchart, Miro. But they aren't free, I'm lucky enough that work pays for it for me. If you already have a Visio license then a VM is probably the best way to go.
