Anyone use a standard zoom on full frame?

I've got an 85mm and a 50mm prime for my D610 and F80 but i recently started using the 28-80 kit lens that came with the F80 for a few things and it's come in quite useful. Only problem is it's not amazing, especially on the 24mp sensor of the D610.

I've had a look some newer options like the Nikon 24-70 f2.8, the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 and the Nikon 24-85mm f3.5-4.5 G ED VR. The Tamron seems like the best value for money, especially with VR and the Nikon 24-85 seems ok, especially since it's cheapest. I could afford the Nikon 24-70 but it seems extremely expensive compared to the performance of the others, and it's enormous. Is it really worth the money? In DX land i had a Tamron 17-55 f2.8 and hired the Nikon equivalent for 2 weeks and couldn't really tell the difference apart from cost and build quality.

Does anyone use a zoom lens on their ff body, any recommendations?

Thanks

By "standard" do you mean the cheaper "mass market" lenses as opposed to the higher-end expensive ones?

I know squat about Nikon but I've always believed in the "glass before body" adage. Full frame needs decent glass really.

I use a Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G on my D800 for when I want that kind of range, can't fault it really.

You tend to get what you pay for. The 24-85 is sharp but slower variable aperture and more distortion. And really, if you are going to use f/4 lens you should probably sell the D610 and move to a D7100 with a f/2.8 or faster lens - you will get better images for much less money!

The Tamron is OK but is not built that well, the AF is slower and less reliable and the VC has some quirks (but you can always turn it off and the Nikon 24-70 doesn't have VR).

The Nikon 24-70 is probably worth the money given what you get (build quality, focus speed, etc.). The price is high but it doesn't depreciate much. I could probably sell it now for much the same as I purchased it new.

Sorry, by standard i meant zoom range. So i guess what's considered a normal zoom range as opposed to wide angle (16-35) or telephoto zoom (70-200).

Thanks

There's also a 24-120 vr, it's f4 so not fast but it's got decent iq and the vr comes in handy

I use a 24-105mm on my canon full frame and really like it for the versatility like Ray though I do love strapping on a good prime as that's when the camera really sings.

Whilst f/2.8 obviously offers more flexibility in low light conditions than f/4, the latter is generally more than adequate for shallow DoF on full frame, offering similar depth to f/2.8 on a crop. If you're after very shallow DoF for artistic effect then f/2.8 often doesn't cut it anyway and you're looking at f/1.4 or faster primes.
