In my Place we are looking at alternatives for our anti-virus. Currently running Symantec Anti-Virus 10.1.7 on the desktops and servers which is centrally updated/mangaed etc. Just looking at options at the moment :)

Wasn't sure If I should post in Enterprise/Server Section:confused:

i've set it up for a few small businesses, can easily configure it to use a central server for updates (can tell it to use the net if it can't find the server -ie, if it's a laptop)

can't fault it, causes no issues and no noticeable slowdown (like symantec)

Yes its very nice, does not impede on the laptop loading times at all. Only thing to bear in mind is that last time i looked v3.0 had an issue with roaming profiles that caused very lengthy log on times. We're still with 2.75 because of that issue, though it may well have been sorted by now i'll have to check.

Funny enough I'm trialling this at the moment as Sophos is being a ****. I still can't get to update the mirror though :(

LOL sophos lagging our laptops was the reason we went over! Its probably worth calling the support line as they are quite good i.e not some script monkey.

Burnsy do you have you licence key files installed and are you sharing the update via a shared folder or by http?

burnsy, you need the licence key file installed on the one that you want to act as the update server, the key unlocks that feature

then it just gets it over http

the update server on the clients should be set to http://servercomputername:118 (something like that, the port number isnt 118 tho, can't remember off hand)

Yes and via shared folder. The ERA console won't download from the ESET servers, just gives an Error 101.

I thought it was proxy settings but that doesn't seem to be the case.

one of our customers (3 servers, 6 laptops, 15 workstations) currently uses symantec...i dont really like it at all, so we're moving them over to eset. i've heard very good things and have been very impressed with the trial software that we've used in the proof of concept testing for their new environment. i think we will probably end up standardising/reselling this to all of our customers in the future.

Thanks all,
Some of our support teams do use roaming profiles so yeah that would be an issue. Can the server side be setup to basically automate the setup procedure at the client end? By this I mean a desktop support person installs the anti-virus from the server and it pulls all the settings down automatically via a config file or similar.

With symantec, it installs via group policy and even versions update without interaction from support.

So for example from 2.7 to 3.0. Could this all be done server side or would support officers need to go around each machine. If the latter a lynch mob would be waiting outside our office. We have around 5000 desktops here:)
