Just wondering if anyone is a member of the site Orkut? It's a community thing similar to Myspace, but you need an invite to join. It's run by the Google people so you need a G-mail account (which I have) but you need to be invited by a member of Orkut. Would anyone out there like to invite me? If this topic is inappropriate feel free to delete it.

Thanks.

I "dont get" all these myspace type places. Whats the deal, who actually cares what music you like, your favourite sandwhich etc etc?

Do people actualy spend time searching through them looking for like minded folk with an interest in spanials and Thrash metal.

i guess im too old.

It's a waste of time, just like all the other social networking sites...

Actually, Facebook is excellent. I agree that all the others are a waste of time though.

I agree, Facebook is amazing and if you are not careful it WILL suck your life away.

Just looked at the Facebook homepage.
So basically, it's like confused.com? It goes to loads of companies, more than, norwich union direct, and many more. What could be easier? Accept, this one goes to myspace, faceparty and all those annoying networking site's that need killed in the face?

Sounds like all the garbage rolled into one tbh.

facebook doesn't do anything like that... it's just social networking within universities so you can find people within your university or that you went to school with and set up interest groups etc. Facebook is allright but someone at kent uni set up a clone (thestudentbar.com) which is currently just for kent uni students and may be expanded to other unis in the uk. It's got a much more homely feel to it and is better at promoting discussions in groups. While it doesn't have as many features as facebook, IMO it's a much better site because people actually talk on it...

No, not at all. It doesn't interface with other social networking sites whatsoever.

Facebook is basically a social networking site for students, hence the quality of users and discussion is usually slightly higher than other social networking services which are full of angst-ridden teenagers who listen to "50 cent" and insist on filling their profile pages with hideous effects, useless videos and blaring music.

Benefits of Facebook:

- Clean interface. Huge seller for me as I can't stand myspace etc.
- High signal to noise ratio. You are, by default, in a closed space with other people in your network, e.g. people at your university. This means that only people from your network can see your profile/pics. You can still be friends with people on other networks (e.g. I'm at UCL and I have fourteen friends at Oxford, so we enjoy the same functionality as if we were on the same network). It also does a great job of keeping out the wierd kids, as you need a valid email address on the network (e.g. [email protected]) on the network.
- Photo tagging. Best invention ever. If you upload a photo, you can click on someone in the photo and then that photo becomes linked to their profile.
- Event planning.
