Hay guys

Picking up my 60d this week and was just wondering if anyone has used the Rode VideoMic it looks like a nice bit of kit and for £80 is a nice price.

so any views on it would be nice

Thanks
Alex

I've used one on a 7D and it's a reasonable piece of kit although I don't have anything to compare it to. It's not as directional as I'd hoped, you can still pick up people talking beside/behind you and while the wind noise is much better than the internal microphone it's still there despite the foam cover. I may need to invest in the extra furry cover at some point.

The mic is decent and £80 is a decent price for it. The only thing that'll do any damage to the audio from it, is the terrible pre-amps built into DSLR cameras... That said it's still a vast upgrade on the internal one.

Get the furry cover. Really vital bit of kit for recording audio outdoors. That's the only thing that'll stop the wind noise.

As for it not being as directional as you hoped, it's only a short shot, so it's directionality is only going to be so-so.

As Chazhurst said, the 'dead kitten' is apparently necessary outdoors. No direct experience here, but I've been researching it myself (will likely buy it in a week or so).

I have the Rode StereoMic as apposed to the VideoMic, which comes with the Dead Kitten. Does a fairly good job of improving the sound on the D3s - but it's not directional like the VideoMic. Although for any 'real' good quality sound isolation I think you need to be spending an awful lot more than than £100 :(
