Anyone with an SV650 able to recommend a decent paddock stand please?

Hi all...

My SV has hit 10k miles and is due a few service jobs. The chain is rusting for a start?! I also need to be able to clean the chain properly once I've replaced it, rather than rolling it back and forth on its side stand :p.

Then there's various jobs I'd like to do like fixing the heated grips, replacing brake pads and hoses, replace exhaust, tail tidy, oil change, filter, plugs, etc...

My commute will also be getting a bit longer soon, so I need to make sure I keep up the maintenance.

So anyway, what type of maintenance stand do I need and what's recommended please?

Cheers louts.

I have that exact one, does the SV650 have paddock stand bobbins/holes for them? if so, get one with hooks rather than the rubber L cups.

Oh and if your chain is going rusty, it's not protected by lube and so you're probably not lubing it enough.

How many miles will your new commute be? I do 35 miles a day, so basically 200 miles a week with other mileage. I go by the rule of lube the chain every tank (so 200 miles) if it's been raining at all, and every other tank if it's been 100% dry. Basically lube it every 200-400 miles. You can see if it's starting to get dry as the rollers will start looking shiny, bare metal.

It literally takes me longer to open the shed and the rear gate to get my paddock stand out and to the bike than it does to actually lube the chain, it's a minute or 2 tops.

I used this one when I had an SV650 and it worked a treat:

Thanks, I'll check those out.

Embarrassingly I don't know what kind of provision the SV has for stands. I'll take a pic tomorrow.

Ok, I'm lubing it about once a week and my commute is 20 miles per day round trip. New commute is 40 miles round trip. It's quite possible I'm not lubing it properly then, as it's a bit of a fanny doing it on the side stand.

I'm using a spray chain lube and I basically do what I can see then roll the bike forward, repeat until I reckon I've done it all :o.

A question to ask is are you cleaning it, or just lubing it?

If you're just lubing it you are just giving a way for more dirt to stuck to the chain.

Best way would be to clean it, wash it then lube it and then put it away for the night. That way it has all night to sink in.

I have one of these and they are pretty good

edit: I cant remember if you have a curvy or pointy SV? The curvy SV has threadded wholes in the swingarm for bobbins. Mine already came with them in.

The pointy has M8 bobbin holes as well, pick up any old cheap paddock stand just for oiling the chain.
Pick up an Abba stand for actually doing any proper work.

Cheers all.

I'm cleaning it then lubing it. I've only noticed the rust since I started cleaning it properly, so maybe it's always been there? Is this a safety hazzard / do I need a new chain? Pics are also to show possible stand solution...though it sounds like I need some screw-in bobbins!

Thanks again.

Uh huh. So are we talking:

- Stop riding immediately

- Replace at earliest opportunity but don't worry too much

- Replace at next service interval

- Carry on until it's worn out but clean it better

?

Chains fine its just surface rust, mine was like it because I skimped a bit on oiling it

Just keep it oiled regular that's all you need to do,maybe your cleaning it too much? Idk

The oil will protect it,stop it rusting, oil the side of the links aswell

Cheers wazza. You might have a point there...I've been focusing on getting the crud off, but maybe less so on the lube in hindsight.

What do you use for cleaning and lube?

Mucoff biodegradable chain cleaner and some generic chain lube spray that the bike shop sold me when I bought it. Someone at work said they just use engine oil to lube their chain. Maybe I'll try that instead.

Try Castrol Racing chain lube. I swapped from Wurth to that and not had a spot of rust since.

Also, I hope you're not cleaning every week? Some say to clean them often, but I've found they're best left alone - you build up a decent layer of protection and with a decent lube the chain won't pick up that much dirt. Obviously clean it sometimes, but not too often.

I cleaned my old CBF125 chain every few weeks and that ended up kinked and rusty. All my other bikes I clean not even once a month, but like to lube in small amounts often and they've been perfect, no rust even through the recent lot of salt they put down.

My Hornet's chain was also clean and well lubed with the Scottoiler, so that's another option if you can deal with the mess (I got the flow right, but it'd always make a mess down my sidestand area).

As far as stand goes, get the one Kreeee linked. Had the same for my Hornet and it does the job nicely. The abba stand is better and will work with multiple bikes, but is more expensive.

It's fine, it'll just be surface rust. That bit doesn't contact your sprockets. I would just check all along it for kinking/stuck links, make sure all the rollers are nice and rolly, get a decent chain lube and stop cleaning it so often.

Also, with your distance commute, I would tend to lube more regularly, but in little bits, especially after it rains. Also, lube when chain is warm, so go for a short ride before, or lube when you get home from work if you can be bothered.

I lube mine every time I top the tank so roughly 150miles that seems to work perfectly with my 200 mile a week commute, by the time it's time to do it again you can just see the rollers getting a slight shine which means they're drying out.

I clean it once in a blue moon with Sdoc100 chain cleaner and a toothbrush.
