Anyone work for Portman here?

My mum is quite high up with Portman, travelling down to Bournemouth from wolverhampton head office at least once a week for team meetings. She is constantly moaning about the IT department not helping out with her laptop/net and speaking jargon :) What do you want to know? :p

Do it. Brand new building, nice location, close to town, and they do need all the help they can get from what I hear!

Yes I work for the Portman (at the Head Office.)

As it happens I'm also good friends with one of the very senior IT bods :D

(No, I don't work in IT though, I'm in Treasury.)

What do you want to know?

Be interested to know what that means and where you heard it?

Just wanted to know what they are like etc. I've been asked for an interview there etc. Yes the building does look lush.

I'm looking for a large company where I can get stuck in and move up the technical scale etc.

Well, the company as a whole is very good. Has its faults like everywhere, but then if any company was perfect no-one would ever leave!

Among the highest payers locally (for what I do, I get about £10k more here than I would anywhere else!)

The staff are friendly on the whole, and it's very well organised and run. Put it this way, Portman has been the fastest growing building society for the last five years in a row, profit is up each year, we've surpassed the Yorkshire to become the third largest building society. We've managed to do things that other companies just can't achieve, and we have a very good reputation amongst our peers.

The building is five years old now, so has its faults, like everywhere I guess, and isn't up to the job anymore. We actually now rent two floors of the building on the opposite side of the road and several departments have moved over there to create more space. But we're right in the town centre, and only a few mins from the beach and parks (perfect in the summer!)

Portman are really investing heavily in recruitment and training now, much more than in previous years. It's a case of you take responsibility for your own development and can ask for pretty much whatever you want (within reason) for training. If your line manager agrees, you should get it.

Annual performance is rated against practical as well as personal objectives - i.e. hard performance numbers in terms of tasks achieved etc as well as how much of a team player you are etc etc. There is no fixed annual pay rise - the higher your performance, the higher your % pay increase. If you fall into the bottom category, 0% pay rise! Likewise for the annual bonus, the stronger you perform, the higher the bonus.

The IT area has taken a bit of knock recently - there was a period where there just weren't enough staff (there were 45 vacancies in IT at one point!) - so it's reputation has suffered within the company, although things are much better now.

What kind of IT role are you going for? Maybe I can help hint around some ongoing projects and stuff.

Sounds like a company I'd be interested in and I know the location well. I used to work for Newsquest and often visited their Bournemouth office, which is virtually opposite the Portman.

I'm looking for a 3rd line role working within their server infrastructure environment. I've come from a Microsoft partner background so these days it's MS 2003, AD, Exchange etc etc. along with the normal XP stuff etc.

They've asked me for an interview, but I'm trying to get a clear date. I've just joined a company as a 3rd line engineer, but I've been carrying PCs and installing office for the last couple of weeks. So I'm may resign v shortly to enable myself to get to interviews to get a good job.

CF93, what do you do within the treasury?

I have the very nice job of moving the £millions around...... :)

And no, before anyone asks, I can't get or send them any! (and even if I could you'd be at the back of a very long queue!

[edit] What's the job title/number you'r coming for? I'll have a look on the recruitment list to get an idea of what they want [/edit]

AN IS SW 1175

Thanks :) Money needs to be better though :(

ok m8,

I'll have a look in the morning when I get to work and let you have a copy of what they've put on the intranet :)

Shame I didn't know about you coming for an interview sooner - cause they run a "refer a friend" scheme - there's £500 in it!!!!!

Been through the entire list of current vacancies advertised internally, and that reference isn't on any of them, so I'm guessing the fact it's at interview stage means they've taken it off the list. Sorry m8.

If there's anything else you want though just let me know.

As regards the money needing to be better, well I don't know what you're salary range is, but don't expect miracles down here. Some roles pay well, others definitely don't (not just IT.)

Ah right, that Natalie.

Now as someone who quite likes Natalie Portman, you'd think I'd have got that sooner....

Told you it was too early in the morning.....

I don't know if this makes a difference, but it may not be a good idea to join Portman at the moment. It has just announced it is to merge with Nationwide, which could lead to job cuts.
