Anyone work in the games industry?

I've worked for EA, SCi and then Eidos (when SCi bought Eidos). Worked as a Games tester, compat guy (testing games with various rigs) and then a team leader and then a Mastering Technician/all round PC & Network guy.

Not in the industry any more though.

I work within and with marketing teams (as an agency) for most major game publishers and also three high street major retailers. Came straight out of A levels (after a mini dragons den thing) and jumped straight into the fray. It is just coming up to two years and I have enjoyed every second of it, growing responsibilities and now I am looking for an assistant to help out our mini team. 2 years ago, I had no idea what I wanted to do with myself, but to be honest I doubt I could have pictured myself where I am now.

I love getting inside info before other people :D and seeing artwork etc before it hits the press. Generally I hope to stay within the Games industry as long as possible, I guess I'm an enthusiast with games which means I have a deeper knowledge and passion for what I do compared with the others around here :)

If I ever leave my current job, I will be going straight to one of the publishers or retailers for a job as I understand their business inside out and would love to be a bigger part of it!

FYI, your www.scarysquirrel.co.uk link doesn't work for me in IE, Chrome and Firefox.

I know mate, the site is broken, no idea why though. Thanks for pointing it out though :)

What agency do you work for mate? And what kind of agency is it? Advertising, marketing, digital?

Print retail management. So everything dealing with everything print and a few other things like, Tshirts, dummy sleeves, posters, in store point of sale, goodie bags, faceplates, limited edition tins, magazines, large canvas graphics, vinyls etc etc.

I work with major game retailers and a few publishers, though we have contact with most large publishers through the game retailers as 3rd party support. I am pushing the business for new publishers next year as I enjoyed working with them and we also get all the promo games and artwork way before the public which keeps me happy :)

Sorry to advertise, but if anyone would like to get into the gaming industry and have an excellent future in a company which is recession proof, drop me an email. My retail team has an open position for junior/entry level assistant for our team who would pick up onto the two largest accounts for retail based clients with instant responsibilities and a fantastic european leader employer. There is too much to detail on here, but we have a job description and would like to have applicants send through their details.

If you think that you would be interested, I can point you in the right direction to our career's site and will kindly help out with any applications. We are based in Bicester if that helps narrow down candidates. Feel free to email me on mcbooner AT gmail DOT com or post below.

Cheers guys :)

Sounds good. I work for a digital agency and although we don't exclusively work within the gaming industry we certainly have a number of publishers as clients. Like you it is very cool seeing stuff early, I got to see EA's release schedule the other day which included some rather cool titles not yet announced :)

Recession proof, you really think so?

I know most of the games industry is nicely safe in its own bubble right now, but if people do start losing jobs/money on a sizeable scale, you have to figure that luxury items like computer games, especially given the cost of them, are going to be one of the first things people cut back on.

Anyway, that's all speculation. Speaking of jobs, I find out tomorrow whether I'll get an interview for Relentless Software. Eep!

What job are you applying for?

I met the guy who runs Relentless Software about 6 months ago at a GamesAid Poker night down in Brighton. He was a nice enough guy, but I can't remember his name.

Our company has only a small proportion of it's clients in the games industry, the bigger picture is the print market as a whole. I will stand here and say we are recession proof (we have no debts, loans) and very positive credit, cash in the bank. So yes, I don't "think", I know that we are recession proof :)

The gaming industry isn't recession proof, but the way things are going....it will be probably the hottest market to be in over the next coming decades.

Just a starting Junior Programmer role. I finish my MSc in a couple of weeks, and after spamming my CV to about 50 companies, they've been the first to get back to me. :)

Ok, fair enough, I wasn't trying to start an argument, just randomly hypothesising.

Good luck Weebull :)

Nearest I get to the games industry is writing reviews for a couple of sites, but I don't get paid for that. Free games are nice though :)
