Anyone worried about Bioshock?

I've had high hopes for this one, what with it being a successor of sorts to the incredible system shock 2, but having watched various videos of it, I'm not sure I'm looking forward to this as much as I was.

The gfx look great, no problems here. I'm liking the underwater settings with the special effects in water rendering, and the art deco look, etc.

I'm worried about the gameplay though. Sounds strange but it seems like there's too much action. Part of what made ss2 so great was the fact that you were essentially all alone in a massive environment that was once inhabited by hundreds of people - and other than the occasional fight with a mutant or other creature - most of the player's time could be spent exploring the ship, finding upgrade points, listening to audio logs, looking out for cameras, working out what skills to upgrade, find stuff in crates, etc.

It was these quiet points that made the game so tense. You know when you hear a creature noise that, within seconds a mutant will be running through a door at you with a wrench, or a protocol droid will coming towards you down a corridor. It's all about atmosphere.

The bioshock vids I've seen all seem to be non-stop fighting. I appreciate they might want to focus on the action elements to make more interesting videos, but I'm genuinely worried that the game looks a little over-saturated in terms of stuff going on.

i said the same thing pretty much a while back. it's like its been changed for the console types.

perhaps, and i cling onto this hope, the videos show the dramatic set pieces because, well, that kind of atmosphere is, to be fair, very difficult to convey in a short video - it could come accross as quite dull for people new to that kind of game.

don't go and watch the E3 video then - 22 minutes of the guy fighting stuff in the same area for almost all of that time :D

I don't know if they have employed the same respawn trick that the unpatched SS2 had but they might have and that might account for the seeming non-stop action.

But also as you suggest a 10 minute video of someone wandering down a corridor in the semi dark and looking at water might not make a very exciting promo video.

They haven't really pushed it much in the interviews but theres loads of "other" stuff to do - invention, research, upgrades, think there's audiologs to collect as well, achievements if you have the xbox version, just simply explore or backtrack to any area you have already been to so I don't think its going to be just action non-stop.

Anyway why rush out and get it if you don't think its gonna be your cup of tea - just wait for the net reviews or till people on here get it and decide then.

as above , ignore this game and just wait for crysis. thats the only game worth waiting for for the next 2 years.

Pfffftttttttt - i'll be playing Bioshock a lot longer than the 2 weeks Crysis will be flavour of the month on here till people start posting "when's HL2:EP2 or UT3 gonna be released" and move on to the next big thing :p

EDIt On second thoughts go watch the E3 stage show but try listening to what Levine is saying rather than the gameplay footage - he's talking about things like ballrooms with the remnants of interupted new years eve parties and splicers talking to imaginary children so really i don't think you have to worry about here being just non stop action theres a back story and atmosphere there for you to follow if you choose to do so .

thats a thought, no one is asking about hl2 ep2, guess its just gonna be too little too late. portal game may be the only thing worth having a crack at.

Potentially the biggest disappointment of the century meh thinks - we will see.

Looks like a lot of people think Crysis is going to be a disappointment, and it does indeed look that way.

the action was more and more frequent towards the end of ss2, whats to say the vids are more about the later on more intense parts of the game?

I hoping they arn't showing the silent exploration/reading of logs bits because it'd be pretty boring to watch in a promo vid, especially for E3 and the like. I'm sure there'll be a lot of tension and suspence like there was in SS2.

I'm much more looking forward to Bioshock and Alan Wake than Crysis personally. Getting fed up of none stop generic FPS releases, which is what Crysis looks like to me, good graphics or not.

why ut3 when its clearly the 4th installment of the game

UT
UT2k3
UT2k4
UT3

Unreal Engine 3, 3 platforms and some other things to do with 3, thats why its UT3.

I thought the action in every vid I've seen looked utterly crap. Then again, the action in SS2 would have looked crap too yet it was still a classic.

Anyway, SS2 >> Farcry by several miles, so I'm still looking forward to it. :p
