Hello all :)

Just downloading BFBC2 off steam and downloading at a steady 330kb/s.

About a week ago the MAX download i would get from anywhere (and has been like this from the start of our contract) was around 280Kb/s on a good day.

Now my question is, My peak download rate on steam is 505Kb/s, didn't actually see that happening but i assume its not lying ( :p ) however i did see it download at 450kb/s for about 10 seconds before it droppped back down to 330kb/s :(

So basically my question, is there anything I can tweak to try and get the download speed up at all?

router stats:

cheers :)

Downloading from steam you're more at the mercy of how busy their servers are than anything else.

That downstream SNR is slightly high at 9.8, depending on your ISP that target SNR could be dropped to 6 and you might sync faster. But that might not actually change your IP Profile.
Are you on a 4Meg or 8meg service?

pretty sure we're on an 8meg service 90% certain. and with plusnet

Plusnet says that the estimated line speed is 4mb and that the current line speed is 3mb.

How would I change the downstream SNR?

thanks :)

have you tried plugging the router directly into your test socket?, it's behind the main socket, just take the faceplate off that alone boosted my 2Mb line to 3Mb :)

I have not, however I don't think i have a test socket up here, I'm not using the master as the router is connected to a switch in my room, and rents will not a allow me to run cables upstairs to the router.

Annoyingly the line that it comes in on (a cable running from a telegraph pole on the road, attached to the house above the balcony outside my room and the the cable runs down to the hallway :mad:

Ye that's worse /:
200 is fine for me and given me faster speed.

Just try some of these until you it's lower

200 = +6dB
150 = +3dB
100 = +0dB
50 = -3dB
25 = -4.5db
1 = -5.5dB

ok just set it to 1, and the SNR has gone down to 6.4 and the downstream IP Profile has gone up

looks like this now

Upstream 448
Downstream 4384
SNR Margin(Upstream) 23.0
SNR Margin(Downstream) 6.4
Line Attenuation(Upstream) 23.0
Line Attenuation(Downstream) 40.0

but even though the downstream has increased, I am still seeing the same speeds in steam/speedtest?

Only thing I can think of is that your profile needs to be reset as it's stuck.

With BT I can just e-mail them and they will do it for me but I'm not sure how you get plusnet to do it.

You could give them a call and see if they will reset it. It dose mean once they do you have to leave router on for 48h for line to set.

EDIT: You could also try and use the other numbers you ain't used yet to see if you can get it any lower and profile high.

have rebooted the router, and it connected with 3104 when it booted, and now i only get ~290kbps download?! :(

Even If i change the SNR it stays at that download :confused:

weird :/

right basically now, I have the SNR set to 1, which gives:

Upstream 448
Downstream 4416
SNR Margin(Upstream) 22.0
SNR Margin(Downstream) 6.6
Line Attenuation(Upstream) 23.0
Line Attenuation(Downstream) 40.0

however the speed in steam/speed test has dropped signicantly :( and is not very varied, would this be a sign that the line cant handle that speed?

will give plusnet a ring tomorrow

thanks :)

I ain't too sure, I would say it can but I'm no expert when it comes to knowing what's the max speed.

Do you still have you bell wire connected & have you ever tried a I-plate?
Have you tried other numbers like 25 to see if that gives you faster speed?

It could just be after SNR being changed it needs time to stable. So if you can try leaving it on for about 24h and see if it's any faster.

When you phone them, ask if they can reset your profile.

Do you know if you're on ADSL2+ or not? If not will be good idea to ask if they can move you on it if your exchange have it.

What router you have?

bell wire? and i-plate? no idea what they are :p yeh I have tried them and no it doesn't.

Yeh thats what i was thinking, as the connection is very unstable atm, so maybe it needs to stablise, I will see what its like tomorrow night.

I don't know if the exchange has 2+ cos tbh my exchange is ****

it is this one:

yeh i will talk to them, see what they can do :)

cheers

Remove bell wire -http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/socket.htm

I-plate - On same link as above.

No they don't have ADSL2+, but ADSL max is there so ask if your on that, if not then ask to be moved on to it.

Okay, let me know what happens.

cheers for the link, not sure i can do that though as not on a master socket. there is no test socket at all its just a faceplate with a telephone socket, nothing else :L

ok cool I will ask if im on that currently and get changed to it if not.

Alright will do. The speed has been going up and down so much, so yeh connection isnt stable now
