Hi, im purchasing my own car and ive decided to go for a 306 1.9TD. I've settled on one im interested in purchasing but as i know little about cars i need a a second opinion.

That is under the bonnet of the 306, i noticed some rust where the battery is and below it, is this a problem or not?

heres the sellers description:

Manual, 156,000 miles, 156,000 miles, Tax & M.O.T Till December 2007, Diesel, Blue, 3 Door, Air Conditioning, Electric Windows, Central Locking, Tinted Windows, Power Steering, Alloy Wheels, CD Player, Clarion Speakers, Front Fog Lights, Achieves 36-39mpg. This really is an excellent example, any inspection welcome. This car has been looked after and used regularly to travel all over the country. If your looking for a reliable bargain. look no further.

He is asking for about 1k

Rust is no major surprise - it's French.

Big mileage on that hence the low price.

Does it have a full service history?

Rust around the battery compartment is a regular occurence would doubt if it will cause any real trouble at least nothing a de-rusting solution and paint won't cure, service history or at least service receipts such as oil filter and engine oil are a good to see, ask about them.

BTW post some pics of the body and interior, would be nice to see the rest :)
and just a wild guess but is this motor a light metalilc blue?

What age is it? £1k is awfully high for the mileage if it's a Phase 1, and 36mpg is pretty poor for a Diesel TD engine. My 1.4 306 Petrol managed 40mpg overall!! A bargain as it was only £850 in the first place...

My 306 also suffered from corrosion in the battery tray, however this was because the old battery had leaked and caused it to rust away..

yep fully galvenised bodys are common to rust :/ {sarcasm off}

the only reason that has rusted is because it has had a battery leak by the looks of it.

the 306 generally should not rust at all unless it has been poorly repaired due to crash damage.

the rust on that is the battery tray not the body (although looks like an area of body might have a small bit of rust too), its removable easily by 4 bolts take it out clean off the rust give it treatment and a coat of hammerite. job done, however i would personally of done it myself if i was selling the car as it can put people not in the know off, and generate sweeping statements such as "OMFG IT FRENCH IT WILL RUST TO BITS Y0"

as for french well the only real poor pugs have ben the 307 and that is a french car built untill recently in the uk!

as for price its not terribly bad the 306dts do seem to fetch a premium its a phase 2 aswell looking at the rad expansion tank so that will bump th eprice up abit more again as well as the fact it has ac, imo price is about right but try to knock him down a bit as always :)

mpg you should get a fair bit more than 40mpg on a run but 40mpg would be about right around town/showing no mechanical sympathy

That engine looks mad. Where is it. All I can see is an interheater and some bells and whistles.
:P normal for the Xu9dt engine in a 306 as it has the top mount ic which covers everything :P

Pretty sure I could see rust around the suspension towers and rust around the inner wings.

And the sub frame is covered in it too.

Maybe they've all been poorly repaired?

ok the suspension towers rust is only surface rust on the top of the struts this as you can see is bolted to the body, it could quite easily be dirt from the quality of that picture too the "rust" behind the pas resevoir i would say again is dirt as that is a sealed seam for starters so would not allow rust through.the rust on the inner wing by the battery is already explained only way that wouldve happened is by a battery leak and if a battery leaks you can have the finest steel in the world but that wont help if a battery leaks and is left un-noticed

as for you being able to see the subframe you must have aweseom xray photo eyes since its not visable in that picture at all due to being under the engine/gbox.i can only guess your looking at the rust on the sump of the engine you can see just infront of the slam panal.

Anything made of metal will corrode. You should see the underside of my old boss's Mitsubishi Shogun. It's only 12 years old or so, but it looks like it's been stored in a river for its whole life.
