Apart from being about 30% Mondeo, apparently.

I am fed up with occasionally having to use public transport to get to my flights for work. Or when I'm not, I'm dragging the wife and kids all the way to the airport, often at silly o'clock in the morning, or late at night, since apparently my wife needs 2 cars when I'm away. So I am looking into getting a 3rd car.

It'll be almost exclusively for airport runs. Maybe the occasional commuting to my office, which is a 100 mile round trip, about 70% of which will be dual carriageway. Probably do this journey about 4-5 times a month. The rest of the time, the car will probably just sit to be honest. So it'll likely have spells of 2-4 weeks of doing nothing.

I had initially set a budget of around £300-400, but everything at this end is a shed. While that shouldn't matter too much, due to the nature of how I would use it, it was pretty clear that upping the budget closer to £1k would greatly increase the quality of motor I could get. And saw a couple examples, reasonably local, of X-Types, with the 2.5 V6, and AWD (which could be a bonus in the winter).

There are a couple of V6 Mondeos too. But I think I prefer the Jag with the AWD and auto box. I have also been offered a 2000 plate Jeep Grand Cherokee in budget. While the fuel economy of whatever I buy is almost irrelevant (since I will be able to claim mileage allowance on most of the miles the motor does), the Grand Cherokee, with it's 4.7 V8 might be pushing it a little. Plus I was burned with my last P38, so I am a little put off by ageing 4x4's. Oh, and seen a few reasonable Saab 9-3's and 9-5's, but again, rare with an auto.

So, anyone experience of any of these motors? Particularly the X-Type.

Avoid Jeep, they are just terrible.

Spend more and get a Jag XJR, then sell it for what you bought it for in a few years :D

Why aren't work paying for you to get to the airport (i.e. a taxi or hire car if you don't want to use public transport)?

As for the X-Type, being "about 30% Mondeo" is probably one of its best points. The AWD models like to eat their transfer boxes so I'd probably just go for a FWD one.

My partners dad has an X type and while it looks nice and is comfy to be in, its been painfully unreliable. I'm not sure if they are known for this but it seems like once a month something needs doing! his is a 57 plate 2.0 diesel that's done around 90k so not exactly run into the ground!

I would also like to know why your missus needs both cars :p

What does your wife do with two cars then?

She needs two cars so that her mum (the babysitter) has a car for getting the kids to and from nursery / playgroup. She also needs a car for getting to her work.

They do pay. But because of where I am in relation to the airport, public transport doesn't get me to the earlier flights, and getting the late flights has me sitting around for a couple hours between train connections, so don't get back until the early hours the next day. And taxis are "too expensive" to get all the way and regularly (they are not, but it's not a great time in our industry).

The 30% Mondeo really doesn't put me off at all. I have looked at Mondeos in that budget too. But thought the Jag might be more interesting.
