Is it possible for ISPs to block access to Newsgroups? My newsgroup was downloading yesterday when it crashed out at about 11am. Since then i've been unable to connect to the Newsgroup. Newsdemon say everything is fine their end and have refreshed my connection as well. I've tried various ports and nothing :(

Error is 10060 - Connection to Server timed out

Would this indicate that possibly the ISP has blocked Newsgroups?

Nothings been changed on my router, or on my newsgroup grabber.

I really hope ISPs don't start blocking newsgroups as well. I was sick of Pipex throttling even encrypted torrents I've just made the switch to newsgroups. How can they stop it? It's a straight D/l from a server, one containing legitimate files.

There might be a light at the end of the tunnel. I have a friend who is currently setting up a usenet service in London. The first since clara news I believe! You should be able to get good speeds and less shaping cos the data will be peered off at the LINX rather than over somewhat congested ams-ix links. Dunno about the pricing though..typical rip off britain I expect.

Pipex don't throttle encrypted torrents. I have Pipex 8MB and regularly get over 100KB/s. Use Azerus and you'll find things much better TBH.

I was using Azureus with RC4 encryption. The encryption worked well for a day afer turning it on then went downhill.

Mad Rapper, do you have Pipex max or midi? I'm on midi and wondering if that is part of the problem.

In regards to the OP, it seems it is possible for ISPs to throttle newsgroups but I didn't look into much detail yet. See below

grrr, fairly sure i've been blocked. i can ping europe.newsdemon.com (Server for top level subscribers and paypal users) but news.newsdemon.com (main server) dies about 10hops in, presumably when it's hitting Pipex

Not even an email!

Strange and stranger, according to the tracert it looks like the data makes it out through the F2S and Pipex network, so i'm not sure it is getting blocked :/

I've just been giving my thundernews newsgroup a try and its working, but not great.

The files began downloading OK, getting 300-400kb/s and after 15 minutes it's going between 5 and 50kb/s
The eu server lost all connections first with the 2 US servers still connected but working extra slow.

This is the first time i've tried in a few days and before that I was getting 400-600kb/s. Being only my second week with usenet maybe the Pipex have had time to 'FUP' me. Time will tell as it may improve and just be down to thundernews who I know now are not meant to be the best
:)
