Just checking are these steps correct for moving isp's ?

1.phone AOl get mac
2.Phone Be* set up account and give mac to them
3.what happens next ? does Aol detect the new isp on the line and then Aol cancel the account ?

Thanks

Be is an LLU service (their own equipment physically located in the exchanges they cover). What happens is a BT engineer cross connects your line to Be's equipment on your activation date and off you go. You can use your AOL conenction up until then.

I got the mac from Aol a while ago made an order with Be* sent them my mac and now BE* are saying its not valid but its only a week old so it hasnt expired and i havnt used it anywhere else and yet still Be* are saying its not valid any ideas on what I should do next ?

I just phoned Aol again they said i would have to wait until next month for a another mac which is not good, are you sure they can generate a new mac even if the last one hasnt expired ?

Sounds like they give you an expired one, seems to be common practice among some ISPs.

Keep being an annoyance to them - I'm making a similar switch shortly.

Just to ask whilst I'm here, did AOL offer reduced terms when you asked for your MAC address?

It's not a expired mac according to Aol the email they sent me with the mac inside said that, surely AOl wouldnt be lying about that would they ?

Ive just made a complaint to Ispa about them very poor indeed called them twice today about getting a new mac and both times they said sorry you have to wait until the one they sent me expired and that one is invalid according to Be* which are saying request a new mac.

Yes the first time i rang them they said all that rubblish and followed by why are you leaving aol rubbish aswell!

Not sure if that's sarcasm but anything to delay or possibly make you reluctant to go through with the switch [given the effort and wait required] is exactly what they'll try to do.

AOL are lying and also breaking the MAC regs. Insist on speaking to a manager, quote the regulations at them and if they still give you grief ask for their full name, job title, etc and send a recorded delivery complaint to them (and also, as said above, contact ispa). Tell the manager you'll be doing this and they might be a bit nicer..

Better to go direct to OFCOM in cases of failure to supply a MAC imho. They are after all the body in charge of such things, and have more teeth than ISPA (who can themselves bite, it has to be said).

I would certainly fight it.I asked for a MAC code from aol on 7th April, and when I phoned up to ask why it had not turned up 5 days later was told they had no record of my request!
I was then offered all the usual discounts etc to stay, which I declined (although it did sound tempting!),and just insisted on a MAC code, which turned up in my email about 30 minutes later. They really don't like handing them out!

Yeah i know what you mean and when they do give out a mac its useless invalid etc, did your mac work just for interest ?

Not all MAC keys are compatible with Be broadband service. The MAC codes that are compatible should be in the following formats

4 letters, 7 digits, forward slash, 2 letters, 2 digits, 1 letter. For example, LLLN0189907/DF34L.
Or

4 letters, 7 or 8 or 9 digits, forward slash, 2 letters, 2 digits, 1 letter (example BBIP1757713/DJ29K or FTIP01753715/BD19J or FTIP012345678/BD23J).

Above is from the Migration page at Be. Does you MAC code fit into what Be says is compatible?

If it doesn't then you need to cancel and then order a new service from Be.

Yes my mac fits in the only differnce is it starts with
LLTH(7numbers)/(2letters)(2numbers)(1 letter) im sure Be * would have said something if it was in wrong format right ?

5 letters at the start isn't within that format.

And Be did say something - they said the MAC was invalid.

There are 4 letters, the MAC is in the correct format AOL or BT Openreach have cocked something up.
The MAC format 'restriction' is only because some LLU MAC's aren't supported yet. Regualr ones are all fine unless something is done wrong.

Have you checked that you or BE haven't made a typo witht the MAC?
Posstive there's no typo in the mac, sent be* the mac twice 2 and also confirmed the mac didnt have a typo by checking with aol the mac over the phone.Be* say the mac is invalid because its been used before which it hasnt , Aol say its valid and wont give me a new mac until the old one expires even ater arguring at them over the phone for 30 mins ffs!

Who should i beleve ?
