AOL help

My mate had a Wireless router from AOL and he wants to set it up so that he can use wireless on his Laptop and on his 2nd pc which is downstairs. He has got the Wireless 'dongles' for the other PC's. How easy is it to set up? Any advice would be great. Bit of a noob at this. Step by step would be great. Thanks.

You happen to know what router it is ? Just they use Netgear now, and Buffalo/Thompson/others prior to this.

In general terms plug in router, log in, disable WEP etc then plug in dongles to each PC (set static IP's or dynamic depending on what you prefer) and make sure it all works sharing files between each PC (ping works wonders). Once you are happy with that enable MAC filtering on the router so only your PC's can connect to the router then enable whatever form of encryption you prefer (WEP etc).

If you can let us know what make and model the router is then someone who owns/has used one might provide the steps.

Its a Netgear. Don't know the model number as i am not where it is at the mo. Just need basic advice in setting up an ADSL broadband and then setting up the wireless side on 2 pc's.

Nope, the software isn't needed.

Well, can't connect my mates laptop or other pc to net. He has a netgear router that AOL sent him. Works fine on his pc. He has 'Mercury' USB wireless adapters for the other pc's butcan't connect. Help!!

Do you have WEP running?
AOL have there own installer for Netgear routers.

As i said, the netgear installed fine. Installed the USB wireless adapters on the laptop and the other pc and installed AOL software but it does not connect. Plus the wireless adapter on one pc says 'excellent speed' but it won't connetc. The other adapter has a red cross next to it on the taskbar.

Any advice would be great. Ta

If you have wep encription running, the the laptop needs a key.
I'm on AOL with netgear and I have no problems.
You should also check the firewall, turn it off, see if it connects.

Open the routers settings page through IE (192.168.0.1, by default the username is -admin and the password is-password) and get the wep key...
