ok, trying to get this to work for an elderly relative
they have recently done the whole recover thing on their PC (don't know why)
after doing that they installed the AOL modem driver, plugged the modem in then installed the aol software
but the aol software isn't picking up the modem!!
tryed uninstalling both and doing it again but no luck!
any ideas guys?

Check modem drivers really have installed correctly. Go look into Device Manager and see if you can see the USB modem in there. If you can't, are there any items listed with little yellow "!" signs next to them? Sort these hardware items out first. Try a right click and "reinstall driver".

If one of them is a USB Communications device, this may be your AOL USB modem. you can confirm this if you unplug the modem and the item disappears from Device Manager.

I once had a problem with an AOL customer as I tried to use a new AOL disk with an old AOL modem. Turns out that the new disks don't include drivers for old modems and I had to trawl the AOL site hunting the driver.

What model is that modem?

there was nothing with ! in the device manager
whats this PPOE thing?
its the BT thingy thingy 50 jobbie. the one that looks like a fin rather than the flatter smaller ones.

I just don't get how it will work with the windows connection thing (like normal ISPs use) but not with the AOL prog.

I had a prob like that when i used to use the Voyager 105 job, i installed just the drivers as i wasnt using the software (when i did a reinstall), but i couldnt get my own connection to work, so i thought i would have to use the AOL CD and software to get it going, but when going through the install it kept failing saying it can't find the modem, so wouldn't go any further, tried a couple of times and no go, so i just quit the setup and found that my net was on, so i checked in device manager and noticed that the software CD had installed the PPOE thing it needed, as it wasn't there when id just installed the drivers, and the install was falling over because id already had the modem installed. :)

Don't forget... for AOL you don't need their software. All you need to do is install the drivers for the modem, and then put your screen name and password into the standard Microsoft dial-up connection box. AOL can be used in the same way as every other ISP if you want.
