Hello,

Is anyone using AOL's silver package broadband? For the spec im wanting, it seems adequate but i need to know if it is any good.

Im looking into changing ISP's and i want something that is uncapped and around 1mbps, but i dont really want to pay more than £17.99 per month..any recommendations?

thanks!

I had that (well the 512kb version) before I went to Eclipse. The download speeds were great as in no slow down any time of day, great pings (less than 17ms to jolt.co.uk) and never had oe letter about how much i downloaded.

However I left due for a few reasons;
1) The indian call centre is full of script monkeys that do my head in.. took an hour to change my billing date
2) 12 month contract - which i managed to get out of as they changed the T&C's
3) The script monkeys you now have to pay for which is insulting I wouldnt mind if they were helpful

But if your okay with the above then fair enough, and just incase your wondering you dont need AOL's software if you have a router that allows you to change the MTU setting (or a modem even?) even though "AOL doesnt support networking with Silver"

It wasnt a bad experience just annoying if something went wrong

Well seen as im migrating over, hopefully that wont be too much of a problem and i dont have a network or router set up on my PC so i dont have to worry about that either.

Do they have problems with peer-to-peer cos some ISP's hammer you on that?
Im with wanadoo at the moment, and have never experienced any problems so the chances of having to call them at like a £10 per min seems slim!

As ste-bla said, fine with no download limits when it works ( which is all the time in my case. ) but the script monkeys don't know a thing, reminds me of Netgears help desk :D
As for p-p i've had no problems there.

well if its stable and reliable enough il go with them. Although i hope they give me at least 1mbps cos im currently with wanadoo, (crappy) and they only gave me 512k connection  and i no my line is more than capable to dealing with a higher speed.

Beware of the bloat of the AOL software. There is so much of it that it has a noticable hit on your PC's resources. And all it is there for is to ram them adverts down your neck.

When I remove AOL from customer PCs, they clearly speed up. Espceially if I can scrap Norton at the same time.

The call centre is awful and gives carp advice. I visited a customer last month who had Norton Internet Security installed on her PC. And the idiots at AOL told he she needed to install McAfee on top!! They sold this to her, she insatlled it, and it totally screwed the PC as both AV products aregued the toss with each other. And Norton's script blocking seemed to disabled most of McAfee's update system. It was AWFUL!!

Personally I wouldn't touch AOL with a barge pole. Checkout www.adslguide.org and you get a few other comments. :)

If you can enter your username and password AND change the MTU setting then yes otherwise its a router or AOL software

yea aol call centers are annoying but at the end of the day if your good on computers you wouldent get the problems and if you do you would know how to fix them. ALSO i had a Uk call center number...... SO that helps alo if you got lil probs with billing ect. Dl speeds are good and the lines hardly ever go down (only on speeds upgrades ect) so overall the internet is good but the customer service is a lacking a bit.

The only time I need to call their call centres is on behalf of my customers. And that will be when they have either messed up their account or broken the service in some way.

If you are happy with them, then fine. I just see far too many problems from them. :)

Can you change the MTU setting on an Alcatel Speedtouch USB Modem? Can't you use Dr.TCP or something like that to change the MTU?

Which MTU setting does it need to be on?

BeatMaster :D

MTU needs to be 1400 for AOL. Not sure how to change it on a Alcatel Speedtouch - do you have any kind of control panel to logon to?

Surely just changing it using DrTCP would solve the problem? I'm talking about this on behalf of Laurio so don't have her modem here to be able to see if I can adjust it on it :o

I used the AOL silver for a year and it was a bit unreliable at times. You cant connect without the AOL software, which means dialing in everytime when you want to go online which was a hassle. I migrated to tiscali 2mb, which isnt capped, for the same price as AOL (£17.99) and havent had any problems yet :) and its nice and fast.

For AOL Users with this problem: Get a router, and then you can totally ditch all of the AOL software. :)

im on aol silver on a network works fine I have never used there software. AOL have been ok for the last year i have used them.

I have been with AOL for 5 years now. Overall i really like them.

The best thing is the uptime and the pings for gaming.

One happy customer.

p.s. im on a 2 PC network too so dont use their software, although they have the "AOL dialer" which is much better then using their software to connect
