AOL Users Pls Look In. (Very sad day)

Just cancelled my AOL account, was very impressed how they handled my cancellation only on the phone for 10mins :D although they did try and offer me the package at a lower price :p Be* here I come.

I got away from Tosscali when they started it, came out of the blue it did, one day was fine, next it was about 20k down with zero upload, there was hell on, they said they didnt support p2p anymore, so seen as it was shaped to 20k odd, then that was how it would stay, as they couldn't change nowt they didnt support, if they did allow ppl more for it, then that would mean they did support it, all they would say when you phoned up about it was im sorry can't help p2p is not supported by tosscali, AOL have never gave any specifics, all they have said is traffic mamangement aka shaping, i wouldnt be suprised if it was 20k as it could be, it could be less, they can shape it to any speeds they like as they have not put a figure on it, and it is now Talk Talk. :D

I too want cancel my contact with AOL but are they charging anybody canceling before contact is up (I have read bout you guys saying we have a right BUT they might just charge anyway)?

How long would I be without a connection for if I did migrate ISP?

also I am thinking sky broadband the connect service it is £17 a month for 8mb 40g cap (i will never download that much in a month)

EDIT sky broadband reckon I could be without a connection for 2weeks? and that I HAVE to have a sky netgear router ect?

They can not charge you, they have changed their T&C's, you are free to leave without paying the rest of your contract if you leave before Feb 1st.

You will be without a connection for the time it takes you to enter your new username/password, took me about 5 seconds, tried to logon to old ISP, said username/password invalid or whatever it says, clicked in the box, deleted username, typed new one in, clicked in the passsword box, deleted it, typed in new one, clicked connect and voila. :D

It isn't generally as simple as changing your username moving to Sky, though it should be if you go onto their Connect setup.

Just got my MAC this morning and immediately signed up for Be* 24 although probably will get near enough 14meg which sounds great :p only a 10day wait to get connected :(

I keep on looking at that page every 2hrs to see if the stats have changed :D I'm very inpatient lol

Don’t worry deadkomodo about the charges I phoned yesterday to get my MAC and I’m in a 12mth contract I asked them if I would get billed, they said my last bill would be the 24th although this does worry me a bit 'We can now confirm that your migration code is ************* and you need to use it by 11/02/07. Please note that if you use this code and you are still within your minimum contractual commitment period, any outstanding amounts due under your AOL Broadband Agreement will be debited from your payment method on or shortly after your first billing date after migration has taken place' I'm always the optimist so I suspect it’s just normal procedure to put this in the email.

thanks for the replies :) my family are totally against no internet for two weeks with the sky option so I am back to choosing a new ISP.

After reading the posts it seemed UKFSN and BE* were the ones to go for.
So I looked at BE* and it looked good but they wont be in my area till at least march :( so thats too late

UKSFN's website (bit dodge looking, guess I am used to flasy AOL propaganda :D ) shows I will be okay to order with them and I would be choosing the "Home MAX 30".

quick question bout the following:

"There is a £52.88 inc VAT charge for a new ADSL activation. So long as you have a Migration Authorisation Code (MAC) and you are not on a LLU based product migration from a nother ADSL supplier is free"

I am correct in beliving that means I will not have to pay anything  so is there any other hidden charges I should be aware of when switching?

thanks

You'd have the same downtime with Be as with Sky.

The migration should be free provided you're on AOL's IPStream service.

Im on UKFSN, and i asked them and they said as long as you are not on AOL's LLU then you wont have to pay. I didnt have to pay when i switched.

Very good broadband aswell, i migrated yesterday.

okay I do not believe I am on the LLU as I live over a mile from the exchange and only get 4.5mb out of 8  I google'd what LLU was but still do really understand (copper wires and stuff :D ).

So if I go UKFSN the downtime should be minimal? At max about a day (I know it may seem sad but I would be VERY unpopular if it was down for much longer)?

thanks again :)

Downtime will be however long it takes you to log into your router or change your dialup username/pwd. If you can't do that it'll be a long time ;)

That doesn't mean you're not on LLU. Strictly speaking, everyone's on LLU now :p
It might be worth trying the BT Speedtest login (FAQ). If it works, you aren't on AOL's LLU.

If you want MAC codes form AOL then you better get them quick, just got an email today about them starting to upgrade me in 3x days seen as theres no 2mb Gold now  .

Thats it im phoning tomorrow for definate, otherwise ill have to pay the £55 to UKFSN as ill be on MAX.

Interesting, just been looking at SamKnows, and Be Unlimited is starting at my exchange on 31st May WOOT, so looks like ill be going to UKFSN until it starts, and seen as its a monthly i can leave whenever it does get going.

My mate's just called AOL and he was told that peak times are going to be 19.30-21.30 (he checked that it wasn't 0730-2130), during which period 'certain areas' will be affected by traffic shaping. And the allowance on his 2mb Gold package is 45gig a month. I've no idea what the allowance is on the other packages is.

We're not quite sure what 'certain areas' means. May be that they'll only shape you if your area is being hammered.

The person he spoke to said they'll send him a copy of the full T&C's.

Is that 45gb the in peak times allowance a month, or is it 45gb for the whole of the month, peak and off peak.

I bet 'certain areas' = p2p.

Actually that can't be right, only 2x hrs of peak times a day.
