Hello,

Just wanna see what specs other Aopen XC-Cube users have got. I'm thinking of some upgrades, so advise would be welcome.

Aopen EZ482
AMD Athlon64 3000+ Venice
1GB PC2700
on-board gfx - ATI x200
WD Caviar 250GB 7400rpm
Sony dl DVD

Cheers, Dango

running this in my ez482

3200 @ 2.5
2gig gskill kit
7800 gtx
dvd ram
200gig wd

i did add in some ducting using the pci slot but had to rip out to stick in a seperate lan card due to nightmares with the gigabit onboard lan but apart from im loving it

Nice setup! :) I'm looking for a gfx card at the moment, but thought it would be best to go ATI. Interesting that you clearly don't need to. Have you managed to get the TV out working? There are quite a few posts about it at the Dr Aopen site, but no solution yet.

never used it to be honest, i have all the connections i could ever need on the graphics card if i needed to hook it up to a tv

still havent tried the dual audio out thing either, nice feature just never seem to have the time to fiddle with it

I'm an XC Cube EZ65-II user. Has the same chassis and psu as the 482 so I guess I could help.

If gaming is your thing, a graphics card would be a very good idea. Not sure about your motherboard's layout but if it's anything like mine, you have to get a graphics card with a single slot cooler. Something that runs cool has advantages too. A GeForce 7600GT or if you can afford, a 7900GT would be an excellent choice.

My Specs:

Intel Pentium 4 3.0C Ghz @ 3.5Ghz
512mb PC3200 RAM
Stock Aopen Cooler with AMD64 70mm fans to silence it.
20GB HDD
Intel Extreme 2 Graphics (Ran a 6600GT and 9800XT just fine)
Random no name TV Tuner

It's a bit of Media Centre like PC really.

Mul

Yeah, good point Chaos, you wouldn't need ther duff onboard TVout if you've got it on the gfx card. Thanx for the tips Mul, I don't really think I can stretch to the GT, but I will now consider nVidea when the time comes.

What experience do you guys have in overclocking? Does the cube respond well? Will I need to replace the thermal paste that came with it? It did look well lame! I'm currently running the bios in "turbo default" mode. Has anyone tried this out? Have you seen a noticable difference?

Later, Dango

My XC Cube responds quite well to overclocking. Generally tops out around 250FSB, but that could either be the board, my cpu or my poor ram.

I use standard bios defaults, and have simply put my own settings in.

Mul

Nice Mul. I'm going to have to give it a whirl. I switched to the Bios' Turbo setting at the weekend, but didn't notice any significant difference. I noticed from the SFF case gallery that you liked to trim on Going to Cali's case. It's very professionally done. Did you ever find out where to get that trim, because I think that my cube would appreciate it.

Aopen EZ482
3000+ Amd 64 Venice (waiting for those fat duals to drop in price ;)
2gb of mushkin DDR (green one...Any good???)
DVD-Rom
2 x 250GB WD Raptor (my only regret should have got those samsungs ****** at that) (upgrade to 2x 750gb when the theres money in my pocket) noisey

Wondering what settings to change in bios for better performence and what settings to change to get rid of some bottle neck in the sytem (if any).

Also the D4 connector, not the yrbrgr (you know what i mean). There is the connection on the motherboard but no cable running to the back panel. What is it for and were do you get one.

You think the heatsink and fan are any good... could they be replaced for something better my get some more juice out the system....

Any mods to get the temp down? liquid cooling???

Getting a few system crashes and freezes my be due to downloading???
Have partitioned drives... could this cause problems?? if say the comp has to access diffrent drives at the same time???

cheers people

Hmmm, interesting. You have a very similar setup to me, other than you have two HDDs to my one. I have no heat problems (that I'm aware of) and it hasn't hung in months, despite being left on for days (sometimes weeks) at a time.

I can only think that it's due to the HDDs. I'm in the process of putting a file server together as I filled up the 250gb in no time, and two ext HDDs... and I'm getting bored of ripping to DVD. I figure that's better for the performance of the PC than wedging more / larger HDDs in there.

I'll check out this connector when I get home. I'm thinking that this could be due to the fact that the EZ482 doesn't have DVI output. For some reason Aopen decided to ditch it in this model. Probably best to get a gfx card...that might help your heat out too.

laterz, Dango

File server sounds good...explain... want this baby to hold every bit of entertainment. ripping everything onto it, rip on to HD i have no DVD-+R no need... any problems with partitoning, is it best to leave them has whole drives? any recommendations on a silent cooling for the chipset heatsinks in there. Left the comp on 24/7 since she booted up just those crashes sure its to do with bittorrent though... what temp can the cpu handle.. generally its hanging around 47deg.

Aopen do an expansion module so it looks like the black beauty we have half the size which you stack on top... maybe something good for your ?file server?

http://xc.aopen.com.tw/Cube-m-specification .aspx?Auno=65&mdstyl=26

Going to get Mac OS X 64 no longer using that fake apple clone "Windows" hope they go bust!!!!!! anyone booted it up yet on these?

File server - I'm just going to stick a box together containing a mobo, wifi & a few hefty HDDs. That way I can dump all the large files I have hanging around onto that and leave a nice fast (but small) HDD in the main unit.

Bittorrent shouldn't cause you any problems. They can be resource hungry, but I doubt that is your problem. I reckon that it's the heat from accessing two HDDs.

OSX on a PC... not my cup of tea. Let us know how it goes. MIght be worth openning a thread to see if anyone else has done this.

I had partitioning problems when I started because those geniuses at MS decided to put a 133GB limit on XP SP1 - The short version of the story is that I ended up formatting the lot to get at the other half of my HDD.

When you talked about getting two 750GB HDDs did you mean 75GB? The largest HDD I've seen is 500GB.

LAter, Dango

im soooooooooo tempted to try and squeeze a water cooling setup into that expansion box, was thinking i could cut out some holes top and bottom and run the tubing straight down into the case

bit of mesh to finish it off and maybe stick a suitable lcd/fan controller in the front

just the thought of cutting two holes into the top of my super shiny case is putting me off at the moment

Firstly you'll find it right here of course ocuk never seem to let us down:

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 750GB ST3750640AS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD-077-SE)
With up to 750GB of pure digital storage in a single drive, the Barracuda 7200.10 is the largest, most reliable disc drive around. New perpendicular recording technology supports vertically stored data bits, enabling increased areal density—and dependability—for workstations and performance PCs. After more than ten years of research, perpendicular recording is now a proven technology. It increases capacity and dependability by storing data vertically, rather than horizontally. And vertically stored data bits mean increased data density—and more gigabytes per platter.

:( dont like that idea either, keep thinking though.... work with what we got, 2 holes in the side with the cpu you sitting dead center of both, perfectly designed for a baby OC machine, hexhaust system just need to be changed. We do have a bay which you could give up to a resivour but was thinking maybe a PCI sized resivour perfect suppourt...Better fan but still quiet silent beast me thinks, so youd never even know how hungry she really is....

Heat sink for Ati chip???
Do You have the D4 TV-OUT Connector cable installed on thhe machine, It is an optional feature?

Zalman ZM-2HC2 Silent Hard Disk Heatpipe Cooler on http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Zalman_398.html something to use if decided to keep the 2nd hd option.

or

Akasa Hard Disk Cooler

anyone tried this one?

With the db if one fan makes 28db of noise and another 32db, do you add them to get a total or does the loudest sound stand.

I was looking at those akasa HDD coolers as well. The Akasa website says that this produces approx. 30dB. I'm not a big fan of extra noise, so if it was me I would plum for the Zalman. I hadn't noticed it before and it is a darn site cheaper than I had imagined it would be.

Nice HDD that Seagate! I'm not so sure about the cost to space ratio. This is a large part of my rationale for building a file server. That way I can stick as many optimally priced drives in there as I like.
