Hello,

Been planing out a new build.

Edit* - current system without the graphics card is a good 8 / 9 years old.

Current System...

Thermaltake Armor Case
Asus Striker Extreme Mobo
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
Corsair XMS2 4GB ram
Thermaltake modular PSU (need to check power, 800w maybe)
EVGA GTX 570 - 2.5GB Nvidia Graphics Card
Zalman Copper heat sink CNPS9500AT

I recently upgraded the graphics card about 2 or 3 years ago.

I used to run a BFG Nvidia 8800 OC 512mb. It had died on me years ago so i cooked it in the oven to bring it back to life. ( i have pics if anyone wants to see and i still own the card) it worked for another year or so but i think it needs cooking again.

New Build Ideas...

Corsair Carbide 500R Midi Tower Case - White
Intel 5930K 3.50GHz LGA2011-V3
Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 PC4-23000C16 2800MHz
Gigabyte X99 SOC Force Intel X99 (Socket 2011) DDR4 EATX Motherboard
Zotac GeForce GTX 980 AMP OC 4096MB GDDR5
Corsair Hydro H110 280mm High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler

Also in the market for a new monitor, im thinking at least 28" curved maybe ?

Build costs without the monitor within the region of £1700 / £1800#

What you think / suggestions please.

Thanks

If you are gaming, ditch the X99 chipset, save money and go Z97.

DDR4 is over rated at the moment and not needed. Some DDR3 2133mhz ram will do the job at a lesser cost.

Stick with the 980.. great card.

Go i7 haswell refresh, OR wait for skyland cpus to appear very soon

Keep CPU cooler. With the money saved, COULD go 970SLI, would be a massive improvement over that 980.

and that case..> INSTANT B***R

It would mainly be for gaming and also Graphic / Web Design with 3D Modeling / Rendering. But mainly for gaming.

Cant i re-use the thermaltake Power Supply i already have, il check the power on it in the morning.

i agree the SSD would be great to have. i have a 2TB NAS Box setup so dont need any more harddrives.

Would the SLI Setup be better than a 980 single card ?
im playing games like Watchdogs / Dying Light / GTA 5 / Batman Arkham Knight / Far Cry 4. Dying light i have noticed is prone to slow down or little delays on medium settings even with Motion blur and depth of field off.

Thats one of the reasons for the upgrade as i feel its the CPU / Ram / Mobo letting my current system down. i think the current graphics card i have is good enough, EVGA 570 with 2.5GB, but if im upgrading everything else i might as well upgrade it too.

Is SLI worth the extra expense or would i be best sticking with a single 980 ? i plan on getting a good 28" 4K monitor.

how does the RAM i picked compare to the ones you suggested ?

I went for the Black edition Mobo, as its got the trade up scheme which would be nice to upgrade in 3 years or extend the warranty.

Ive typed this out and reading back over it im thinking im cheaping out with the above setup. I remeberd i want something with a bit of beef thats going to be future proof for the next few years untill the next big build.

I think i need to do more reviewing on this.

Above build with a lot more beef, perhaps now i can find the healthy balance between builds.

I feel it really helps posting these builds with price and images to help tailor them. i also compared the graphics cards from the Hall of Fame card above to the 980 zotac and also Dual SLI 970 KFA2 Infinity Blacks

The 980 hall of fame card had better core clock specs compared to the zotac, but i wonder if dual SLI 970 Infinity blacks be better than the 980 Hall of fame for just a few pounds more ?

i think if i adjust the mobo setup i could probably get this price down just under £2k

The 500R does not support the H105 cooler.

Depends on which one it is.

You need 2 x980 which have a proper 4Gb of RAM or 290X cards, AMD are also releasing the 300 series in a month or two.

how does the RAM i picked compare to the ones you suggested ?

You have DDR4 listed, the board+CPU is DDR3 only.

Your 2nd spec is better as apart from the H105 not fitting the case the ram does work etc.

Thje 3rd spec is better again if you find a case that fits the H105, or maybe go for a H110.

Ahhh didnt notice the DDR4 on the DDR3 board, my mistake it was late when i posted. i clearly overlooked this issue.

you would assume the Crosair Hydro would fit in a Crosair case, Ive research people even having issues with the Hydro 100 fitting. But with a few adjustments it Does fit. Il go for the 110 as its slimmer.

I dont fully understand what you mean by NEEDING two 980's which have 4gb ram. Do you mean its needed if i go for a 4k Monitor ? Ive never done an SLI Setup. i should research into this a bit more i guess.

4K gaming is demanding and a single card wont provide good frame rate in the top titles such as BF4, Crysis3 etc.

It also appears that the GTX970 4Gb doesnt quite work as expected and only 3.5GB is super fast while the last .5Gb is much slower, so as resolution and texture size increase the 970 las behind, the 980 doesnt suffer like this and neither does a 290X.

I was pricing up builds with the 4K G-Sync Monitor, but by adding the 2nd SLI Card the builds were coming in close to £3000 with needing a new power supply to handle the build.

by sacrificing and dropping down too the 27" IPS Panel which costs more than the 28" 4k Monitor it means i can remove the second GPU Card and PSU unit which over all cuts down the build cost.

My Thermal Take PSU is a Thermaltake Tough Power 750w, which should be enough to run the above setup. which also saves me money.

OK i think this is the last build im doing as its wreaking my head weighing up all the options.

Ive compared the 970 to the 980. there not much of a difference between the KFA2 970 H.O.F to the KFA2 980 H.O.F. yes i agree the 980 would be better, but im sure i wont notice the difference between the two cards and at the end of the day im saving a chunk on my wallet while still maintaining a SLI Setup im sure two 970 H.O.F are better than one 980 H.O.F ?

this would allow me to go back and get the 4K monitor as i do graphics and web design and im a Graphics Junkie

Due to having a SLI setup im going to need a bit more power than my current Thermaltake Tough power 750w to run the setup so i went with the corsair RM 850w as my current PSU is about 8 years old.

I went for the Pro Ausu X99 board as its only £20 more over the base model
same reason for going for the Retail Intel to get the 3yr Warranty, not a huge saving going OEM.

Ive read a few guides on how best to fit the Corsair Hydro into a Carbide 500r case. It can be done, but it might not be easy. i just need to double check if its the 110 version or the 105 verson and if the 100i or 105i is better. (more research needed on this.

sigh, so i kind of figured nvidia would release a driver to fix the ram issue on the 970 cards but they say its a hardware issue so they not doing anything about it.

looks like a 980 build might take place after all

Stulid just wanted to say thanks for your help and info to help me perfect my new build.

Ive done my sums and my budget is £3000. I intend to pay back £130 over 24 months. ( im sure you can understand £3K is not a figure i just rush out and blow without doing my research and weighing up all the options, its a lot of money )

Do you think the below system is the best that it can be for the price, or is there anything you, in your professional opinion would change to perhaps save money or to better the system?

Also whats best to avoid the pitfalls of expensive upgrades in the future. Should i be thinking of selling off parts after 3 years? to avoid an expensive £3000 build in 8 years time?

I guess its finding the balance between how old the part is and how much i can claw back towards an upgrade. as ive recently listed my current PC build of 8 years old with added Sony Monior and Logitech Z5500 5.1 Speakers for £650 ONO and people are laughing at how old the Core 2 Duo E8400 3.00ghz is and how im crazy trying to get any money for it but theres also a Nvidia EVGA 570HD 2.5gb card in there only 3 year old

damm now your making me rethink the Mobo CPU and Ram aspect of the build.

now looking into the Gigabyte Black Edition as the trade in after 3 years for a new mobo would be a nice upgrade. around that time i could think about upgrading the CPU + RAM and hold perhaps sell off the two KFA2 HOF 980s to claw back some funds and upgrade them at the same time while holding onto everything else, Case, PSU etc.

Just waiting on credit card to come in the post. if i can get it under the 3K range il be happy enough.

Stipulation is that GF wants close to a 10K diamond ring LOL

Did some more tweaking and now that im going for the Gigabyte Black edition the "white theme" i planed on doing is taking more of a back seat.

That lets me lower the 2 graphics cards from the white KFA2 HOF to the much cheaper KFA2 SOC priced at just £419.99 each. The performance spec is just a little less than the HOF edition.

i quite like the other parts i picked, and had planed to go Corsair parts as much as i could.

With the new parts the price has dropped a good £500 and comes in just under £2500.

The ability to trade in the Motherboard after 3 years i think is fantastic. It means i can sell off the CPU and RAM to try and claw back some money to put towards new CPU and RAM combo to place inside the new motherboard which hopefully be running the next generation. I could even attempt to sell off the two 980 graphics cards at the same time and hopefully put the money towards next gen Nvidia cards which hopefully will support 6GB or 8GB onboard memory im sure they will want to be competing with AMD 8GB cards.

I might even purchase a new keyboard as im using a Dell Black keyboard which is about 9 years old lol never liked anything else.
